It is not dead, but max 2 leagues per year, and if the numbers and mtx sales are bad, they will reduce to 1 at best. I don't plan to play PoE2 unless they make a good game, but if a normal new league comes out of PoE 1,I will play.

It's not a difficult equation to solve. As long as PoE1 continues to make GGG money they will maintain it. So the real answer is up to the players and if you want to keep it around speak with your wallet.

Long term, I think PoE 1 will keep retention of players more than PoE 2. If GGG ever sets up anything like an auction house (not that I advocate one) it would fix many of the trading problems.

Right now, someone who rarely plays standard has little to no incentive to log out of a new league character to trade in standard. That cuts out 70%+ of potential trades.

For many leagues, the mechanic is fun. GGG has had several that I would rather go mow the lawn, and pick weeds than play the league mechanic. It's a matter of opinion and taste. The one thing I like, or used to like, was the ability of using a large collection of gear to experiment with non-optimal builds. GGG's continual item nerfing "This change affects all versions" is slowly killing that joy in standard.

The 30% lesser damage on Quill Rain for instance - that was just a terrible move. That someone could make "broken" characters on standard has never ever been untrue. Leave people's characters and gear alone!

Many fresh leagues are just grind and trade in a new fashion. Some I find fun, and will play instead of standard. Affliction was enjoyable - Not because I was able to get rich from the Wildwood, but I liked the Warden of the Maji ascendency. The detect evil, run speed and resists with unsocketed gear was a fun challenge to build around.

If GGG wouldn't take away the ascendancies, I would play the Legacy of Phrecia for the Daughter of Oshabi. I expect that I will be playing PoE 1 and mostly standard until GGG comes out of their "vision" coma. No new MTX for me until they add all the PoE 1 MTX's to PoE 2. They need to deliver what they promised us.

I think it has been a few months since I've played PoE 2. I might try it again when the whole thing is done. Maybe not then even. PoE 2 has left me with that Diablo 3 bad taste.

Well, maybe not dead but not thriving either...

It will be alive and running again when we get a new league. At least for some time ;)
