Why gate the new gems behind lab?

Back then I never felt like running lab because that meant I have to buy tons of bases to have a matching base-enchant pair, because good enchants on bad bases are pretty much always worthless.

This won't be an issue anymore, and even though I'm not a huge fan of lab, I'll run some here and there on good layout days

I'll try to insert some empathy into this discussion...

I ask each one of you to think about what is the single game mechanic in POE that you hate the most and just ignore completely. Now think about the scenario where a massive new shift in gameplay is created and gated behind that particular mechanic... Not fun right?

Personaly, I don't care much for Labyrinth and usually just do it for the ascendacy points but I'm ok with doing a few more runs to try and get something useful.

If GGG had decided to gate the new quality gems behind Incursion (for example) I would be mad as hell! Or, even worse, gate it behind obligatory trade...

For context, I strictly play SSF and never traded anything or interacted with other players to get anything done... I have always accepted that I do less stuff and more slowly that people that play Trade but that's fine with me.

With all that said, my point is that the "greatest meta shift ever" should not be tied to a single game mechanic and should be available in multiple ways of playing this game.

TLDR: GGG, please diversify the access to the new quality gems!

Have fun, everybody!

Thats why you play trade league and ignore such mechanic while having the reward. Game will never be balanced around SSF. You are free to choose to play SSF but do not expect for GGG to make changes to fit your playstyle.

I agree with you on this point :-)

But can you tell me (as an experienced Trade player) why it would be a bad idea to spread the access to this new quality gems across the entirety of the game and not just keep them behind Lab runs?

Is there some kind of potential disruption of the trade economy that I cannot understand due to lack of knowledge of how Trade works?

because GGG spent shitton of time making Lab and if you put lab rewards outside iof it (like we had for some time) it becomes close to obsolete. They want to use "old content" as well.
Removing content from the game is never the solution. Reworking it is. WHo knows, maybe they will update lab at some point?

Fair enough :-)

I guess we'll have to see how it all plays out when Affliction gets going...

Have a nice league, everybody!

Every piece of content has its unique reward type. Bosses have their unqiue items, heist has replicas, bestiary has beascrafting and so on. That makes it worthwhile to farm that specific content, it gives you a reason to play it. The less played the content, the more valuable to rewards will be. That depends on usefullness of course but thats the basics of it.

I simply dont get all the hate this thing got. We had enchants locked behind lab for years, you would also had to buy them or run the lab. You would in addition have to run heist for gems. GGG just halved the effort needed to get what you need. Why is it suddenly a bad thing? You had to do lab anyway, nothing changed, just the thing you enchant.

Because its not lab run your best end game gear for extra bonus, now its a part of the common grind and you will need to lab run multiple gems multiple times, and it also closes off selling end game gems to anyone who doesn't want to do endless lab runs.

I disagree here. The example given is a completely optional league mechanic, Incursion, that happened to go core at some point.
Lab was never optional. It has been an essential part of the core game from the moment it was released. It is also very well designed, great voice acting and whatnot, so totally makes sense the way they did it.
I mean they could give the random Heist Gem rooms a chance to drop trans gems aswell sure or expedition monsters when picking the mod for gem drops, that would be fine i guess. But that is so random, nothing valuable for ssf i guess.

Also if u play ssf in a reasonable way nothing has changed really, you see what cool stuff drops and then you reroll a char according to what you got.

Yeah, because you didnt need to run lab mutilple times to get your helmet enchant.
