[0.5 endgame] What about slow builds and meaningful combat?

Key word right there, survive. I wanted it to thrive.

I left poe1 at harvest league, after realizing league after league it was just a different flavor of migraine inducing screen explosions.
So I was eagerly anticipating the sequel when it was announced that combat would be different. Only to now see it had all just been bait and switch.

Unlike those from the half million that started out back on release only to never come back after, I lingered around hoping to see the promise of better combat fullfilled. Only to see even more migraine inducing screen explosions from the new teasers. And up to 5 bosses at once on ritual?

To say I am disheartened is putting it politely.
Do not equate slow with meaningful.

You can make meaningful combat decisions at a variety of paces.

Ignoring the obvious nerf-worthy trigger-build candidates that exist, or HH-enabled shenanigans, there aren't many builds that are otherwise capable of completely circumventing meaningful engagement with content.

The ones that are, are almost all magnificently-brittle glass cannon tink-chaser builds that logarithmically scale deaths/hr with div/hr, and/or purpose-built boss-specific farm builds who's performance doesn't transfer that well into non-boss content.

I can think of a handful and that's about it. Anyone playing maces or quarterstaffs is being "meaningful" unless they're wearing literally mirror-tier gear or are, again, being enabled by HH buffs or triggered skills.

I'm pretty sure triggered skills are gonna see some "adjustments" with the 0.5 patch.
Who am I to say anything, I don't respect my time either.

nah, if thrive means appeasing a casual and tourist audience like it did in 0.1 i much prefer the game to stay niche and focused on what it does well :)

also dont forget "a game made for everyone is a game made for no one". poe has it niche and should stay true to it, theres a lot of AAA games where these tourists can play their meaningful combat!

There's nothing more amusing to me then someone calling others casuals and tourists when that someone is pushing insistenty for the most casual gameplay ever. How are these people so oblivious is beyond my understanding.

why are people still expecting "slow meaningful combat". ? just because they told you 6 years ago at exilecon? maybe its time to accept that its not gonna happen and move on? when they say something its not written in blood. they can change their minds

TLDR: They want to dismantle the game’s identity. Some are unaware of it, others openly push for it. Just like new Starwars main movie were ruined by Disney.

What they’re asking for is fundamentally incompatible with the core design philosophy of the game. If implemented fully, it would alienate a massive portion of the player base and accelerate the game’s collapse.

And the pressure never stops. GGG opened this door themselves. Chris Wilson predicted this divide years ago.

Now the campaign has expanded into every corner of the game, demands like removing rarity from gear are just another example. A simple player poll would shatter a lot of these delusional narratives instantly, but GGG won’t do it because they’re trying to retain everyone while avoiding backlash from the loudest forum factions.

That’s the real issue: GGG keeps trying to appease an extremely vocal minority while pretending it represents the broader community. You can even see the disconnect internally, Jonathan talks publicly about wanting to remove rarity from gear, while Mark visibly reacts with WTF energy.

These moments fuel resentment on a level people barely recognize anymore. The hostility has been building for years, and now it’s turning into outright contempt.

Rarity was always a divisive one before PoE2 even got announced. Heck are you on about? Mark was fine with removing it too. I wonder what you'll do when they do it.

It's just another pillar that haters will keep hammering down until it's ruined. Then they will move on to the next target until the game collapse.

It has happened before and history is bound to repeat itself. I'd even say it's bound on account.

What will I do? I hope I won't be crying on the forums too much like you do asking for something I'll never get. If they want to destroy their game, they are free to do it. It would be a tragedy, but they keep blundering so much, even though this one would be the stupidest move they could do, I'll be holding their beer eventually.

The simple fact that Jonathan is entertaining rarity on gear removal is enough data for any serious player that GGG has completely lost the plot and deserve what is incoming.

Since the slow methodical attack didn't work, I expect forum warriors to launch a coordinated attack, using that clip and such to get it done. Especially because that clip is recent, and the slow methodical attackers are clinging to a 6 year old clip.

they tried «meaningful combat» in campaign and failed. probably because they dont have the same definition of meaningful combat than us. for them +2 sec attack time is meaningful. for anyone else it s a reason to quit the game.

also

now bosses are too hard for some , people get stuck and quit -> they nerf them. (btw, did the same in poe 1)

so we have tedious white/magic/rare monsters in giant maps and stupid easy unique bosses.

but what to expect from designers that think that going back to town to look at a vendor for an upgrade every level up is fun gameplay.

so back to poe 1 design is probably the safest solution. 6 hour campaign and map blasting after. (i know, 4 for racers)

What do you mean you "hope"? You're literally here complaining about it. And it's not the first time either. You've probably been here longer then I've ever been, the forums specifically.

quick rely on rarity. the pb on rarity is not rarity. rarity is a scaling factor. having multiple scaling factor is cool. the pb is that some build have it way easier than others to get it. so if your build is more niche you feel fucked. so the solution is dead easy. BALANCE and maybe MEANINGFULL choice, by meaningful i mean having to ponder how much you need compared to clear speed / dmg /defense. And if you think it s too hard , worse case scenario you make it easy to have a decent amount. on tree, on an easy implicit to get but hard to max, ... infinite ways to do it.

people complains cause when they look at their items all they fucking see for all builds, and i mean all is life and resist. and 0 interesting mods. BORING. stop being boring would be my advice. the only one having variety is the weapon.
