From what we've seen so far, do you feel you're going to stay with PoE1 or move to PoE2?

If so, then yes. I propose that doing so - making PoE2 run and play and function exactly and precisely the same way as PoE1 - would be the worst mistake Grinding Gear could make. I cannot figure out why nobody ever seems to get it when they hear that Grinding Gear has already made that game. There are no new sales to be made. No new players to be found. No room for growth, no room to develop new skills or abilities or talents. All such a course could possibly allow is cannibalizing the existing playerbase to no actual boon or benefit whatsoever. They wo0uld've spent seven-plus years, millions of dollars, and hundreds of thousands of man-hours to simply say "we made the same exact thing you already have! Wanna start over just because?"

That way lies madness and ruination. Far better for the new game to be exactly that - a new game.

Doing the same thing produce the same result. Doing different things produce different result. BUT would it be what you expect? Experimenting mean they need to be Allowed to Fail…a lot!

Making vastly different game is very risky. Keep to the status quo is the safer bet. People like shiny new toys. It is silly to assume people don't buy and play similar games to those that already exist. Of course they do.

Failed games mean losing Millions of dollars and jeopardizes the company. Successful video game developers are notoriously risk averse. They want to turn video games into factory lines that lay golden eggs.

Just want to chime in here with a quickie: You are technically not wrong, but the main driving factor here is lost market value, not loss in revenue. Of course, they somewhat go in tandem.

CDProjekt RED, for instance, made a ton of money with Cyberpunk 2077, yet the company nearly went down under with >75% drop in market value shortly after release. They managed to pull a 180 and not go bankrupt, but are in the green again only since this year. That doesn't happen for everybody.

CDProjekt RED Probably knew there are problems with the game.

Imagine if Cyberpunk 2077 don't even sell or make money, they would go under first. CDProjekt RED is allowed to do what they do if they make money.

Purposely releasing broken or unfinished game is intentional. They wouldn't have money to fix anything if they goes bankrupt first. If they spend years making a game, cashflow needs to come in at some point or they would certainly go bankrupt.

Releasing unfinished games is cheaper, is less time consuming and still makes companies billions of dollars so why the hell not?

CDProjekt RED didn't have a good product to sell. If the product is already bad, sell it anyway. This minimize losses.

Or "We need money now,, We'll fix it later."

To be fair, there's a lot more to it, but it'd just further derail the thread. In short, CDPR got pressured by investors to not delay any further, even though they desperately needed it.

Then, investors went

when the rushed release was met with outrage.

But again, that's a topic for another time.

I've particularly enjoyed what I've seen so far from 2. Playing 1 is like rolling a dice every time I face a bunch of monsters because I can't figure out what's happening on screen due to so many enemies together with special effects and stuff happening on screen and on the ground at the same time. People don't even bother to see what archenemy mods the enemy has anymore. It's more like a mindless currency farming simulator game than an ARPG. Boss fights are still good and satisfying, that's why I still play it.

Well, it's about a month and a week until you can have a go at it. :)

It's interesting reading through this thread and hearing how many, who I would assume to be, PoE lovers just blanket refuse PoE 2 before ever even trying it...

You might hate it, that's fine. You might love it. You have no idea until you actually sit down and play it.

Making these grand pronouncements of "I will never play PoE 2 because it 'looks' xyz" is really weird...especially when you consider that its FREE! You aren't being asked to shell out $70+ bucks just to try it. And even if you were, you can generally just return what you bought and get all your money back.

There is absolutely no downside to just trying the product and then making up your mind. But there are huge downsides to making up your mind based on incomplete videos, without even trying the game itself.

And then to spin the conversation so far and so long as to convince one's self NOT to even try the new game out of spite? It's just so strange. Who is the protest for?

Like...I can understand if you choose not to play an entirely different game from an entirely different company. But a similar game from the same company that made a game you LOVE, and you won't even give it the benefit of the doubt to try it because some videos made it look slow? What the hell is that?

Another new account, I guess?

Anyway, it's not free. It's been confirmed that you need to have spent either $1000 over the lifetime of your account, or buy a Supporter Pack to gain early access. And then you get to play Acts 1-3. Basically what 3.0 release was.
