Yeah the clarification sounds about as clear as a puddle of mud to be fair.
They say it's not a spell so spell costs don't affect it but clearly archmage made spell totem much more expensive in 0.4. My guess is that they changed that in the background but we still aren't clear on what works or how.
Rathpith worked based on your life in 0.4 so it would be expected to work the same now but does it? How do we know, apparently things change but are the same but they are different... Like WTF GGG, make things clear in their wording about EXACTLY how they work.

You could make totems baseline 0 cost and they would still have so many drawbacks that they will never be the best.
They should at least lower the mana costs by 40%. The cost doesn't seem to be made for spamming so many totems.

What the game says a totem is:
"
Totems are allied constructs which use skills for you. Totems are not Minions and their skills benefit from your stats, though they have their own defensive stats and can be damaged or killed.
So your assumption is quite wrong to think that the archmage interaction would work out like based on that. It will work out fine but it (the totem itself not archmage) wont be completely free of cost. That is something to work around.

Mana recovery is awful in poe2 without being able to leech, get mana on kill or even spawn mana remnants. They made totems less clunky thanks to the no charges needed, but they are going to be meh to play. Even unchanged they were nowhere close to being S tier, especially when you've got Twisters/Snipe in the mix and that's just what we know about.

Is this a move to make using Ancestral Bond still impossible for chaos (and attack) totem builds, which have nothing to do with Archmage, with Dark Effigy having the highest cost of them all? Or to have such builds use Spell Totem only for curses, while self-casting, as that might be the only economical tradeoff for hardly having other totems consistently in place, or at all, due to their cost? Time to make other or updated plans one day before launch I suppose...

For all the "haters":
1 Twisters require ~5 buttons to be overpowered (Slash + Arrows + Barrage + Mark + Twister) + 2 different weapon sets with different trees + high investment in Attack Speed.
Person who can go to t15 maps with this skill in 5h, 100% can do ~6h run with most other skills that in the game. It's a practice question, not a problem at all. Try grenades.
2 Part play nerf is probably targeting bots that stack a lot of extra damage for carry + IIR. Yes, it ruins experience for some other players, but we will have healthy economy because of that.
3 Crafting decent weapons with 5 clicks that can do 100% of the content is not healthy. Player power progression need to be smoother. Also, wait for runecrafting please.
4 Armor-based archetype might be buffed because of all new stuff we get, like Runic Ward, armour scaling, new uniques and tree changes (we have more good nodes already). Play it first.
5 Please, try to also focus on good changes. Don't be greedy in only negatives.
