Hard crashing PC locks up

Same hard lock after loading into Clearfell

Logs indicate: 13947281 833064f7 [CRIT Client 13372] File Not Found: Metadata/Effects/Microtransactions/Flasks/LightningInABottle/EPKs/characterFX.epk. Using fallback EPK file
Here’s how I fixed it, step by step:

Go to your computer and open Documents.

Open the My Games folder and then the Path of Exile 2 folder.

Find the file named poe2_production_Config. Right-click on it and choose Copy.

Right-click in the same folder and choose Paste. This makes a backup copy in case something goes wrong. If it doesn’t work, you can rename this copy to poe2_production_Config.

Now, for the original file:

Right-click the poe2_production_Config file again and choose Edit.

Look for a area that says [LOGIN] and change gateway_auto_select=true to gateway_auto_select=false.

Then, find [Display] and change renderer_type=DirectX12 to renderer_type=Vulkan.

Don’t forget to click Save to keep your changes!

Nahhh… doesn’t work. Yesterday games was crushing on directx and it worked fine on Vulkan. Today is vice versa. It is still very random.
Same here, complete PC freezes about every 10 minutes randomly when changing location.

Had the same problems last night - 7800x3d / 4080S / latest windows update.

Switched to vulkan today and started the game from the PathOfExile_x64Steam.exe in the game folder. CPU still goes up to 100% for a short moment during loading screens, but no freezes/forced to restart the PC for the last 2 hrs of gameplay.

Seems to work for me as a temporary fix until they patch it hopefully soon.

My temporary fixes worked for 3 hour and then crash again. Report if your fix is actually working for longer.
After troubleshooting and playing for a few hours, I think I might have found a workaround. Changing the Path of Exile .exe file to compatibility mode for Windows 7 might have fixed the issue for me, but it's too early to tell. At least it's something you can try and takes only a couple of clicks.
However, loading the game, entering new areas, or using the town portal still spikes my CPU temperature to 95 degrees. So, if your system is still crashing, you might also want to try turning off or reducing any overclocks, if you have them.

People on reddit, steam, twitter and discord all report this issue.

4080 SUPER
Ryzen 7 7800X3D
Win 11 24H2

This issue was already a known problem in PoE1 with the latest Win11 24H2 version. 24H2 apparently changed things on the kernel level.

- most people run a combination of AMD X3D chips and RTX30 or RTX40 cards

- most people run Win 24H2

- the issues seems to be that the CPU cores all run at 100%, freezing up the system, unable to recover aside from hard reset via power/reset button

- people who are able to downgrade to 23H2, most of the time say it fixes the issue of the freezes

- some people say changing the renderer (DX11 or Vulcan) helped, but alot of people run into the same issue again later

- some people claim setting CPU Max to 98 in Power Option avoids the issue, with others saying it still crashes

- some people claim disabling 1 or 2 cpu cores in the taskmanager for PoE2, avoids the issue of a full PC freeze, but the game still freezes up

GGG ignored this issue popping up in PoE1, they are basically forced now to look at it.
Please Kieren_GGG add this issue to the "Known Issues (PC)" list because it basically makes the game unplayable for people affected by it.
I second this please look at it.
