Why gate the new gems behind lab?

Lab will no longer unlock ascendencies in poe2, it needed a new reward.

I believe they removed item enchants to weaken top players in a way that will barely affect casuals(who don't farm or use lab enchants anyway) and also to make room for potential future systems.

Hottest take ever but they should just simply remove the One Life Only mechanic from Lab and make it some kind of challenge run instead. That is what makes Lab so unfun and tedious to do.

Could also add something exciting to Lab Trials than just additional access to Uber Lab. Perhaps you could get one Transfiguration Enchant per Trial or something.

that's a significant nerf for a lot of builds, especially for the builds that use the wither enchant on belts and the 120% crit one

it's only for the helmet enchants. I think we get no compensation for boots and belts enchants being lost.

Of course it's a nerf.

And while top meta skills like Tornado Shot get the best enchant baked into the gem itself, most skills do not. You lose boot, glove, belt and helm enchants, and I can more or less guarantee that the "new skills" aren't strong enough to make up for it. At least most of them.

I'd love to be proven wrong here. Time will show.

Exactly for that rason. Lab was forgotten and they wanted to make it more popular.
Dont like it? Buy gem from lab runners.
Great change imo. Heist is worst thing they ever added to the game, I would rather run lab 10 times than do a single Heist. Also makes being lab runner more profitable than it was.
GGG has proven multiple times that people will do even worst mechanic possible if its profitable enough.
