Corona virus

Dr John Campbell's 11th March update -- watching this gentle old fellow lament the US' lack of response is heart-breaking, but this is how it is. Somehow the official maximum number of infections in the US (1,037) is *less* than the Mayor of Seattle's suspected cases in her city (~1,100). What the actual hell?

^You seem extremely biased on this issue and for good reason.

But what i don't really understand is why your feigning ignorance on group dynamics.
The thought that you can be "pro-active" where the public conscious isn't ready to play ball yet is ignorant at best and disastrous at worst.

The only nations that are currently able to do so are either

1) semi authoritarian regimes
2) nations under constant pressure(think israel, czech etc)

Not a single free and liberal society started tackling the issue before people died because they obviously don't have the means to do so without infringing on free or liberal value's.

The people need to move and so does the consciousness and then the politics will follow suit which is whats currently happening in most of the EU for example.

Don't wait for an answer for that from me. You're not getting one. Too much effort for virtually no return. Whether you live or die from this, whether you only get mildly ill or not at all, is of no concern to me...so why would your thoughts or beliefs on the topic matter to me either?

___

So I may have mentioned that I contacted my GI doctor on Monday. He's the prescribing specialist for my humira, which is the biologic that keeps my main chronic illness at bay but makes mincemeat of my immune system. I emailed him my concerns regarding this, covid, and my upcoming trip.

Well, he got back to me late this afternoon (three days later). He sounded, as I expected, very guarded. He's really just the middle man for my meds, but every 6 months I have to take blood tests, bone mass density tests, stuff like that, that he clears so I can keep getting the meds. So I was well justified in contacting him. I let him ramble for a bit, lots of we don't knows and please be carefuls and obviously if you catch it it will be very serious but don't feel like you can't go outside...before I put him out of his misery and told him I'd cancelled the trip and was practicing social distancing already.

His sigh of relief before saying, 'that's absolutely the right decision' was impossible to miss. I imagine he's been dealing with and will yet be dealing with a lot of patients who are less apt to make some hard calls for their own well-being.

But please do read between the lines here. I'm on an immuno-suppressing drug and the doctor who handles this a) couldn't tell me what would happen if I caught Covid-19 other than 'very serious' and b) was ridiculously relieved when I said I'd already chosen to operate at high alert. He didn't say I was overreacting.

He knows what's coming.

Attitudes like that amaze me, civility and concern for one beyond oneself or ones own loved ones is the thing that will tackle this situation and what your relying on to curb the inflexion point.

The disonance between that piece of written stuff and the video's you link is stagering.

uh, no. theyre all about taking personal responsibility because the system cant handle the strain otherwise.

Nowhere in what I linked is there even a hint of the sort of mollycoddling of morons you're implying comes with being an alert citizen during a pandemic. Thats the government's job. So either you didnt really watch the videos or read the article...or you are choosing to grossly misinterpret them to be antagonistic. Either way, we are still back at me not thinking it matters either way. But don't put words in my mouth or accuse me of hypocrisy when I have been very much of one mind the whole time. Wash your hands. Wash your hands. WASH YOUR HANDS. Practice social distancing. Be prepared for daily life disruptions. Treat strangers like they may or may not be infected, because there is every chance even they won't know. Wash your hands.

This is absolutely first and foremost a war fought on the individual front. If you choose not to fight, fine. That's on you.

They are raising the awareness on personal responsibility in relation to the nation and your civic duty and yes because the system won't cope with it otherwise which again, relates to the civic duty part to keep your own elders as well as the elders of other family's save.

Directly contrasted by your statement that you don't care whatever happens to me.

The fact you have the intelect to rationalize those opposing views is impressive in its own way, but not beneficial in this time because it helps nobody.

The first part goes directly against the empathy campbell is promoting currently to move things in the right direction and i don't even know why you mentioned it.
Complaining on the one hand people aren't being empathic enough to think about the risico groups and in a twist of fancy show a complete lack of empathy towards others yourself.

Hey, mod?

How is COVID-19 not an "inflammatory topic," in violation of the Code of Conduct? I mean, if this were China, certainly you'd ban such an inflammatory topic.

And it's universally inflammatory now, isn't it? You don't have to live in Wuhan or Italy for it to be something affecting your thinking.

Ergo!
