Many years ago, he mocked Republicans. When he first announced his campaign, the GOP was truly worried he wasn't GOP and would run independent if need be.

I think Trump shifted toward the conservative side the same way many others did - after seeing the continual nonsense and clueless downward slide by the left as they embraced winning elections more than they cared about America's future.

To be sure, the GOP has done much of the same (worried about winning over policy). Congress is essentially 538 unruly children whose primary purpose is making sure they don't get assigned a baby sitter so that they continue doing what they want.
