[3.7] Chunky Chargrill Chieftain - Incinerate CwC Volatile Dead - [2x Demigod winning build]

Would this build work with Poets Pen?

I've been having too much fun with that lately and wondered if it would work the same, I would imagine there would be a slight dps drop?

I'm running unearth and body swap on one, and volatile dead on another for mapping.

Poet's is dead - see 3.6 Patchnotes

That's honestly a little depressing. It's been around for a few patches and was never overpowered, just fun to play with. EDIT: How about throwing in barrage with unearth to shoot off alternating wands?

It seems that Volatile dead has a slight damage nerf, while incin has a slight buff.

Loreweave has been nerfed to 78% resistance. Does this change the BiS for this build now?

The only thing worth mentioning that would affect severely the build is the change to Critical Strike and its interactions with Controlled Destruction. Since the lowest possible crit chance now is 0% (as opposed to 5%), this may be an issue.

But! We get a new gem that benefits channeling skills with charges and damage, maybe we just need to swap? Or don't use Elemental Overload at all I guess...

Hard choice, any help is greatly appreciated, this will be my League Starter unless Soulrend turns out to be better than ED :p

It does look as though a poet pen set up won't work in 3.6 I don't know about the barrage and unearth idea, that would be something that would have to be tested by someone with the gear.

Looking at the numbers on the gem changes I don't think it will add up to any changes that are too obvious, I highly suspect it won't be noticeable at all in either a positive or negative direction.

The loreweave is still great for this, even with the lower 2% res cap to 78 it will out perform the next best in slot which would be either a very good rare chest or a belly of the beast (I ran with a belly for all of betrayal as I never managed to 6 link my loreweave after I eventually got the rings for one, ssf problems and all that).

You are correct in pointing this out as a potential problem.

There is a work around for if controlled destruction is too detrimental to keep Elemental Overload up and running.

The way to do this is swap out Controlled Destruction with Elemental Focus, this does a few things:

You lose ignite damage (very small amount of damage on this chieftain version of this set up, this would be significant for an elementalist version of this)

Incinerate actually gains a small amount of damage at maximum stacks in my current gear (the buff to incinerate should boost this even further).

Volatile Dead loses a little damage on the spell (due to the ignite loss, so no upfront damage loss)

Volatile Dead gains a little damage on the corpse explosion part even taking into account the loss of the ignite damage, so more upfront explosion damage.

This switch over to Elemental Focus from Controlled Destruction could be an optimisation at a certain gear level even pre 3.6.

So all in all the build survives and will be a few percent damage better off if you run it as it's put together right now.

I see, thanks for replying! Elemental Focus it is then, since I'll be using this build for earlygame content only (up until T11-ish) that shouldn't be an issue.

In rough stats, some base crit chance to spells from any source + Loreweave crit should be enough to mitigate the potential 0% crit that can happen, we just need to optimize the build further if the intention is lategame viability.
This build seems super fun! Planning on trying this out as my league starter in hardcore, Chieftain seems really tanky and I like its synergy with fire. Thoughts on using the newly buffed fireball for leveling and using incinerate CWC fireball once able? Also curious how you'll change some pathing and what will be sacrificed for some of the new channeling nodes!

Fairly new to build tweaking and build creation so feel free to shoot me down immediately, just curious, thanks!

Exactly what I think! I'll just try out the fire spells while leveling and see how they feel.
Not sure if the channelling cluster is worth it, but maybe we can drop the Blast Radius AoE nodes because Incinerates AoE has been buffed.

Updated skill tree is now on the front page of the guide and also in the PoB link. This is subject to change over time though of course.

As for fireball, it should work okay, but it wouldn't be anything I would try. Let me explain my train of thought here.

Fireball is indeed looking utterly fantastic, I mean, it's super strong right now pre 3.6 so in the new league it could be legit crazy damage. But one of the main things to do with fireball is to scale the initial hit of the fireball in order to maximise the ignite DoT you get from it. This is a proven method of clearing all content in the game.

My chieftain set up doesn't pay any attention at all to ignite scaling (elementalist does that better in all ways from what I've tested in PoB) so I would have to fundamentally change the build, into what would essentially be a different build in order to achieve anything viable from this.

If you chose to ignore the ignite of fireball then it would perform as an untargeted single projectile. This would cause a ton of problems or other things you would need to change in order to overcome. Also, with the changes to crit base and what may be a required change from controlled destruction to elemental focus to keep elemental overload active then this build would end up in a position where you can't inflict ignites anyway.

The very best way to utilise fireball would be with a dedicated fireball caster, but that is indeed something I'm thinking about for later in the league!
