So I was able to play for a few hours without any issues after my last update.

When I went to exit, I logged out instead of exiting the game.

When it went back to the login screen it again froze at the same point.

So even being in game for a while and going back to the login screen can cause this to occur, which leads me to believe its not so much a client side issue. If I was able to get into the game once and play without issue for several hours, and then not exit the game but still have the error back at the login prompt something is up with the login screen.

I still think it has something to do with the "message" it loads in when it freezes at downloading.
Experiencing some issues as well.

I can log in and play but if i exit while in game to the main screen the game freezes. No sound and no movement, I can move my mouse only.

I have to ctrl/alt/del and stop the game from running. Everytime this happens I see another program called "Exception" but when i try to bring it up to the front nothing happens. The exception program goes away after i close out the game.

I read over these posts and I do agree that there must be a mem leak of somesort. In my defense I have 32gigs of ram.

This only happens when i play and exit to log in screen. If i exit the game and then enter back in everything is ok.

Just ran the packcheck and i received no errors, nothing. exited and ran the game. No patching took place of any sort. So the file is good and the issue is still present.

Was about to complete a transaction for a flicker gem which I was looking for forever, when I was "kicked for completing too many actions in a short amount of time," back to main menu, "Downloading...," freeze.

Lovely.

This is my exact situation. I ran the packcheck, and nothing came up.
I've just opened the client while running task manager, and when it runs normally it seems to take up about 820000 Kb. When it doesn't run properly, it starts about there and ticks up about 100000 every second until it caps out my 4 gig or so and throws the exception.

Running win7 64 here, I wonder if there's something we have in common here in terms of hardware/OS etc?
WinXP x32 freezes too.

I got ~10 lvl somehow, then game freezed w/o any messages or memory leak. ~5 sec freeze, ~10 sec "unstuck" - my char could move but no moving animation played (!), then permament freeze and "Downloading..." on login screen after process killing.

PackCheck.exe doesn't help.
Removing Docs/My Games/PoE folder doesn't help.
Reboot -> 5 minutes ingame -> goto post's begin.

...and freeze is here :(
I had this problem as well...Here is the kicker. I had had it freeze, got my task manager up and beheaded the task...started again.

Same issue happened, did the same thing.

I ran the PackCheck, ran a third time and same issue. Used the task manager again. Saw the resources it was using and weird network spikes. Beheaded the task.

Said....what the hell ran it one more time let it get to the bad allocation part....let it self terminate. Reloaded, problem solved.

If you don't let it run to the bad allocation it doesn't seem to fix itself.

Just letting people know.

I noticed that using alt+enter to switch to windowed mode during loading actually helped me as the game wasn't frozen on the login screen.
I could just alt+enter again after logging in to play normally.
In fullscreen, the loading is rather slow, while in window mode, it was quite fast.
Maybe using the fullscreen window mode would correct the issue ?

edit : i just tried windowed fullscreen and it ran without problem, way to go for me

I just had this issue again and I used your suggestion. Nothing happened...resources are still skyrocketed.

Are you using Win7 or something else?
