Maybe parry technique could work for you? It has AoE, everything does, but it also have the melee vibe with parrying.
It's far from meta, we all know that, I am just trying to throw you something you could try to enjoy :)

Yet he has, unfortunately, made a game where melee combat feels bad. That's just the truth.
Some people enjoy it, true. But some people enjoy cutting themselves. There are always masochists. The mass reception is that melee feels janky and/or bad.
Very good catch there on that interview. Jonathan's words couldn't be more clear there. Yet We still get people all the time basically saying that he never intended anything of what he was saying.

You seem to be unable to explain what you want because its a paradox to begin with. You want melee to be able to clear as good as other skills, but you also want melee to be restricted to single target strike type of skills.
In the Video he is always up close in the enemies face hitting them with a stick, but using additional effects for proper clear.
He is not hitting the primary target from far away as a ranged attack / spell would.
Now now friend, just because you don't understand what I'm saying doesn't mean you get to put words in my mouth. I'm not asking for melee to AoE clear as good as other skills, there's no paradox except to the confused mind.
I have conceded true melee won't work in this game, because yes it's not going to work to hit one enemy at a time when you have 50 mob swarms coming at you. They'd have needed to stick to the original expressed vision of meaningful active combat, where mobs had more hps, presented in fewer numbers, and presumably took a series of moves or combos to take out. In the case of multiple mobs (but not 50) you'd have to take some defensive maneuvers, not just spam your AoE attacks faster. They wouldn't have put mechanics like parry and active blocking in the game if they had been thinking to bum rush swarm with mobs was the way to go.
But they are now bum rush swarming PCs so real melee isn't going to work. You can call an apple an orange all you want, everyone else still knows it's an apple even if you don't.

PoE2 combat is best in class though. Its the best feeling combat in any ARPG.
Sure you have some people that are really mad about melee but he reached the goal he states in that quote.

Those are bad examples. You can absolutely use Parry/blocking while "bum rushed" by a swarm of mobs

Friendly posts like this make it hard to stay motivated to argue over a game. It's all good friend, appreciate the thoughtful response. I did try it, but didn't find it effective enough relative to other builds I toyed with, so it feels like you're kneecapping your progress for no reason.
While I have seen people frequently suggest ways to sort of just limit what you use to make the game feel like its harder, I just can't do that in a game where you're also trying to collect resources and trade with other players efficiently. I'd like the game to feel like more of a challenge naturally and not just make it take twice as much time to progress for the sake of saying that was more challenging.

There are some issues with melee but I wouldnt call it major or even something to worry about over other systems and mechanics that need attention.
I would suggest a different archetype as the things you are seeing are... not really a problem with melee.
Been playing melee since .1 just fine here as well.
My assumption is you're basically using the melee attacks that are effectively projectile attacks/AoE spells, but would love to be proven wrong. Show us the way, show us how up close melee combat works well in this game.
Your assumption is basically wrong I can throw something together here in an hour or so. Mace strike and rolling slam are the closest hitting melee skills in the game, of which rolling doesnt even hit several bosses unless I actively take OFF concentrated area;
so I hope the goalpost doesn't magically move afterwards showing you these two skills in action.

Hard disagree, even Last Epoch has better combat than PoE2. It is lacking in many areas though that probably keep it behind overall.
