It's part of game experience, making choices, you know, like in real life.
But classes in PoE ARE ascendancies. Same tree, same gems, same gear — the only thing a class actually decides is which 3 ascendancies you can pick.
So 'build diversity' doesn't come from the class system, it comes from tree/gems/gear, none of which need a campaign rerun. What the class system actually does is force me to make a new character and slog through the campaign every time I want a different ascendancy. That's not a meaningful choice, it's friction.
My proposal is MORE RPG, not less. One character I can grow and reshape over time = real character progression. Deleting and rerolling for every ascendancy swap isn't roleplaying, it's homework.

Classes in poe are starting locations on the tree. Ascendancies are an extention of the class but not the entirety of it.
PoE1 also has other class stuff like forbidden flesh / hidden notables
Please GGG, I need my sparkly crown MTX in PoE2.

I wouldn't say no to ability to skip campaign once completed at least once in a league but removing all classes is just an unreasonable ask from game design perspective.
But... you would be making choices? You'd have more choices to make. Select your sprite, select your starting position on the tree, select your ascendancy.

The only purpose it serves right now is main campaign redo slog
I fundamentally disagree that removing barriers would create better diversity. It's more likely to homogenize the build meta.
Big -1 to op because this is definitely what`s gonna happen. I know this sounds like a great idea but in somewhat competitive game its utopian concept. People, please think sometimes.

Just my take on this. making every class being able to start anywhere and just differ by ascendancy + being able to reroll that would not create any diversity, but make everything more the same. I mean rn you have the choice of class with fixed starting location, then you can make most kinds of builds work from there. Maybe theres an insane combination of blood mage with some crossbow skill - but then you need to somehow make it work from the other side of the tree... If you could just start anywhere thered always be a best option. So its not really build freedom, just some pseudo choice. You play crossbow? Go crossbow starting area!
Also, running the campaign again can be fun, trying to optimize the run, leveling with some leveling uniques... Other than in 0.2 I got pretty much all my characters to endgame and only then didn't wanne play any more cause it felt exhausting. maybe 0.1 was too rippy, but I think it feels good now... Campaign skips just skip half the "character development", trying new skills and all. I dont get why people just wanne go to endgame when its not really different from campaign gameplay... And doing campaign like 3 times in a league cant be that repetitive and all when you want to play endgame doing the same map literally 50 times...

Mate you are totally wrong, if there is a blood mage and crossbow combination like in previous season, you literally have to start over change your class to blood mage to be able to get specific ascendancy so the only friction we really see here is starting over and going through the slog campaign there is nothing more literally nothing so I don't see any meaningful thing in classes if we have obvious meta class and everybody going to change their classes to that one, to choose that specific ascendancy that's it
