0.5 DISAPPOINTMENT
" Nope. Look up the announcements GGG made on their vision for PoE2. Slower, more methodical and strategic combat instead of the total lack of challenge the first game devolved into, not having the massive crafting bloat the first game built up so that ground loot was important and valuable, etc. No one projected this shit onto the game, they announced that was the vision and plan for it and then two patches in began to hack away at that more and more. |

" Unnecessary complexity are tiered runes for example, where the only difference is usually +2 or 2% increased something I remember Jonathan saying that poe 2 wasn't supposed to have socketables (augments now) at first bcs he didn't like hiding the item portrait, or that loot filters wouldn't be necessary bcs ground loot would be good In a very short time they added both loot filters and tiered currency like orbs, runes and essences instead of making rares drop with higher tiers affixes depending on ilvl or something like that (just an example) And now they're going to add even more runes including a new tier (perfect) and the genesis tree from poe 1 instead of addressing a much bigger issue with rares not being worth picking up most of the time, including T5 I like a system with depth, but the way GGG usually does this sort of thing is awful tbh, like tiered stuff is genuinely bad in so many different ways, it reinforces the need of loot filters, it makes UI navigation with controller even worse, and it makes the low tier variants useless most of the time Last edited by Vyend#2601 on May 9, 2026, 5:20:13 PM

" Thats not what complexity means. Youre describing bloat which is another problem entirely " Im pretty sure you can hide sockets in the options unless you hover over them with the cursor. " Rares can drop with higher tier affixes, thats what the tiered rare system is for. Granted, its not very good at the moment for the most part but the basis is there and can be improved upon. Even with adding crafting via essences and so on they achieved their goal of making ground loot matter more with white bases. |

No one projected this shit onto the game, they announced that was the vision and plan for it and then two patches in began to hack away at that more and more.[/quote] You are 100% accurate with that statement |

" Citation needed... A lot of people keep saying this but I havent seen anything to actually support this. What I think happened is that people saw the gameplay footage released before EA of the different classes that was supposed to show off the skills (in campaign zones with very bad weapons) and then for some reason assumed that this is "the vision" and what GGG intends the gameplay to be like at all stages of progression in the game. If you can provide an actual source to your claim i'll be happy to concede you're right. |

" Complexity = opposite of simplicity. This is literally what it means. Which one is simpler? Four runes that each give +2 strength per tier, or a single rune that gives +5 strength? " Sockets are hidden by default.. That's not even the point of what i was trying to say.. Last edited by Vyend#2601 on May 9, 2026, 6:28:25 PM

" Not in any meaningful sense. Simply having more elements that do the same thing in varying degrees doesnt contribute to complexity in any way that negatively impacts newer players or increases mental load. Its just visually different. Actual complexity is having more different elements that interact witch each other. Increasing the number of those elements leads to exponentially more possible interactions, which can be daunting for inexperienced players when they try to identify useful ones. |

" Because you haven't looked for it. It is here and there in different interviews from old ExileCons when POE2 was just revealed. The game was generally advertised as "slow and methodical", with good combat, unlike POE1 or D4, and all old promo vids easily confirmed that. Even closed beta (several months before 0.1.0 release) overall feedback was that the game stands on middle ground between soulslike and arpg. While they could easily make closed beta a POE1-like zoomfest. But they didn't, intentionally. Because that was their "vision" at that time. But then the train went off the track. Or better to say switched back to old POE1 track. Probably because POE1 people cried too much and GGG said several times they are not happy if POE1 players won't play POE2. So here we are. " They tried that direction, it didn’t seem to work, and the game evolved. I don’t think holding the devs to early promotional comments from years ago is useful at this point. There’s a valid conversation here about bloat, crafting friction, rune tiers, loot filters, and whether new systems are adding real depth or just more chores. But “GGG once described a slower game” doesn’t really settle that. The current version is what needs to be judged, and the feedback should be about whether the current systems are fun, readable, and worth the added complexity. |

" I don't agree that it "didn't work". It could work very well - but not for POE1 "zoomzoom spreadsheet divs-per-hours" audience, and that was intentional decision to please these people and not newcomers. Hence severe playerbase drop from 0.1.0. The game was pulling in two different directions and they just had to choose, and so they did that. " That won't help, as this is another strategic decision, promoted mostly by Mark, from what I understand. He keeps saying again and again: "we need more, more, more, more" because it is "bad to have less". This is his vision, no feedback gonna change it. Anyhow, it is too late already - they won't remove all those systems they introduced. They can tune it, but all this bloatedness will remain and will continue growing (effectively blocking all potential new players, but it seems like they don't care anymore). It's okay, it is their game, they do what they want to do. But lost potential makes me, personally, sad. Because the bones of the game can offer much more than just POE1 reskin.
