" Gem level nerf would enable more mods on items to be viable, thus improving itemization. Currently, +gem levels makes itemization feel one-dimensional. Last edited by CharlesJT#7681 on Dec 2, 2025, 11:12:40 AM

The main problem is that most spells are in a terrible spot without the levels, so it's not as simple as removing the affix. They need to fix the balancing on spells, too. Martial weapon skills can compensate for their stats with a lot of different gear that gives raw damage to attacks, but spells get zilch (except for a few specific, extremely worthless, uniques). Gem level is effectively the only way to increase base spell damage, so they are mandatory for most spells to be usable in endgame.
Seriously, the difference between +0 and +7 spell levels on any spell is monumental, it goes from T15 being an hour a map to five minutes with the sheer gain in damage alone. It also causes a secondary problem which is the mana cost problem. Your abilities cost a fortune because they are ~Lv.30 and mana costs rise exponentially with increased base cost, which increases with gem level. But skills need to cost mana because reservation doesn't exist anymore (and it shouldn't, mana reservation has always been a dumb mechanic). |

" Quite often, when someone proposes a nerf or buff, there's a tacit understanding that it would require other balancing to compensate. That power could be moved to the passive tree, or ascendancy. Just think how nice ascendancies would feel with the power of +5-7 all skills distributed throughout, but that power can be implemented in interesting ways. That would effectively be a 'floor raising" change. I'm always in favor of narrowing the power gap between the top and bottom end, because it's a more reliable player power scale to balance monsters around. " Everyone has an opinion bro. If it doesn't fit to your needs doesn't mean it is nonsense. For me nonsense is to kill a boss with two clicks while others melt the mouse for a little damage. Nonsense is Poe1. Literally a +3 Peggi game. I don't want Poe2 become Poe1 clone. |
|
" I think moving that power to the passive tree would be a great change, especially making ascendancies feel more powerful. Last edited by CharlesJT#7681 on Dec 2, 2025, 11:12:44 PM

" Now think. If +gem lvls feel mandatory and make certain items one dimensional, how is putting them on the passive tree not make those nodes... mandatory? The only solution is to provide proper, in depth intricate scaling based on the type of gameplay you want to engage with. But then again we are one year into this beta and there is still no dot multi in this game. They've clearly bit off way more than they can chew and it is going to be literal years before poe2 is in a decent state. |
