Fucking get your Campaign Length right
Act 1's length is fine. I think GGG should make all other acts similar to Act 1 in length. As the endgame gains more content each season, having to play through a very long campaign every time is bad for the game in the long term.

Yeah, I agree. The length is ridiculous. Doesn't really matter how amazing the campaign is. After you have seen it once or twice, you have seen it and it starts burning you out. At least it does for me.
If it remains this massive I doubt I will be able to motivate myself to play through it more than once or twice a year. |

Dunno if someone already posted it but Jonathon is firm that campaign is looked at for being optional and an obstacle because it hasnt been made fun enough. Ergo he will not relent on a shorter one because the solution is to enjoy the campaign. I think that is a good idea but I dont think shaking the 'campaign irrelevant, only endgame good' mentality is going away anytime soon.
One cannot help but wonder how such a lust for loot can affect a persons mind. Although these exiles appear to be our salvation, it would not take much for them to turn on us as easily as they fight gods and demons.

" People who actually play the game and put money in it are a minorty. The majority plays the campaign and leaves till next league, and do so without putting any money in. |

" Yeah I never understood the whole "the game doesn't start till endgame" mentality. The game starts at level 1. You should be invested enough into a character that you are willing to pursue it to the league. I guess if your only goal is to clear screens in 1 click and get 100 divs per league then maybe but idk never understood it. |

agreed.

A thought in favor of faster campaigns, though, sort of.
Another arpg I've played is Last Epoch. Now, I would say that LE is worse than PoE2. I definitely prefer this game to that one. But one thing I saw in LE that I consider a good idea: That game has these special dungeons, I guess is the thing to call them, that bypass sections of campaign. Your first character in a league will mostly likely have to do the full campaign normally, because the dungeons require keys to access, but on a secondary character after looting keys, or if you did manage to get one early on your first character: Simply put, you'd be in, say, the 3rd zone of act one, go through an exit to a zone that's just a door (separate from the actual zone 4 and path to it), use that key I mentioned to open the door, fight through this dungeon (which should be easy because you have gear transferred over from your other character), and when you exit the dungeon, you step into Act 2's 5th zone, and can continue the campaign from there. But also Act 2 zone 7 has another dungeon that brings you to Act 3 zone 9. Likewise these dungeons, whether it was because of bonus xp or just having more/higher level enemies, fit for your transferred gear, are liable to have you come out the other side at level you should be if you'd done campaign normally. Or at least, not as behind as you might have expected. All this to say that instead of providing an outright campaign skip, GGG could appease the people who want to skip campaign at least partially by providing fast-track side paths for secondary character similar to what LE does. |

Man, I hate this attitude. I LOVE the campaign and, even in POE 1, with its vastly well developed endgame, I struggle to remain interested once the story is over. Story is what makes a game great, in my opinion. Yes, endgame is vital, yes mechanics are vital, but without a gripping, emotionally rich story that resonates with me I'm not playing (or paying).
But I'm here for this. POE 1 owes a great deal of its success to the brilliancy of its story and the consistent high quality of its voice acting. That's always been true. Do you think people are still playing D2 for the mechanics alone? Nope, it's all of the above and the rich, uncompromisingly powerful vision of this fantasy world in which we strive against all odds. Grinders show up later, then complain, as though their lack of imagination is the standard. Well, it's not. |
