0.1.0d Hotfix 1

To begin with, who the hell thought it was a good idea to add that absurd energy system to trigger spells?

Cast on? CAST ON something, not "cast to gain energy to cast something."

It’s a terrible, unpleasant, uncomfortable, and frustrating system.

Have the devs forgotten that video games are supposed to be fun?

Not only is it a terrible system, but they are killing it on top of that.

The energy system completely destroys the charm of trigger spells completely.
Unless, of course, you get 100% energy per cast event, which is the same as removing that useless system.

Moreover, don’t you see how absurd and unintuitive it is to have something called *“cast on critical strike”* that does NOT trigger when you land critical hits? (Critical hits that, by the way, already have a chance to occur or NOT occur).

For the love of God.

If you’re so concerned about the use of low-level gems as activators, why don’t you simply require that active gems must be at least the same level as CoC (or whichever corresponds) for their activation to work? Instead of building an absurd system around a minor issue.

...Only 3 quotes may be embedded within each other...

I wanted to quote a lot of the thought out and good responses but the forum won't let me.

Solid points but I think some people are missing a key focus here.

A lot of us played Cast on X because it was something you could do in PoE1 and its has a familiarity, this is important when a lot of other things have changed between the two games.

But PoE2 isn't PoE1 so following a guide is helpful, just like it is in PoE1.

If SCO is pushing Maxroll and Mobalitics and these builds exist there, most people are going to use those builds as they tend to be easier to follow and are more detailed than a stream or YouTube video.

So please stop acting like thousands of players copied the same single "busted" build. I know myself and 2 others both did CoF Comet, different skills and different passive trees.

I would say it was far from busted. I died over 100 times, there were plenty of struggles along the way in just act 3 alone.

But now I cannot even progress in Act 4 (act 1 Cruel) because my build doesn't function remotely the same way.

I agree a 1 to 1 freeze proc was a bit silly, but you also would run out of mana.

Instead of going 100 to 0, they could have added an internal CD on Cost on X gems so it could only proc every X seconds or they could have picked better values for the "Monster Power" equation.

I have no issue with a nerf, I have an issue with no reduced or free respec.

If their intent was to nerf it to the ground and then slowly hotfix it until they are in a more balance state, they could have expressed that.

Grenades seem to be fine after their nerf.

At the end of the day, people paid to get into Early Access. Losing a character and countless hours to a massive nerf feels extremely bad.

Please just consider giving reduced respec, or free, like there has been in PoE1.

Please also consider many of us only have so many hours in the day to play and it isn't easy to reroll another character.

I've enjoyed PoE2 and I plan to continue to play during EA, but please in the future consider our time invested into these characters regardless if we just "copied a busted build" we still had to level, get an uncut skill gem to learn Cast on X, level to 41 for Comet and clear Trials to even pick the ascendancy that feels like it cares about Cast on X skills, especially when there are many Uniques in the game that full convert damage to other elements.

Thank for for coming to my TED talk, I hope to see an update later addressing the Path forward.

This isn't even a nerf, it is a build killer. I left D4 for similar reasons: constant nerfs to sorc builds (S4-5), no regard to character balances (S6/VoH Spiritborn). I agree the Cof/Comet build needed to be re-worked - not killed. At least give us a respec reprieve each time you do this to us please.
They said pre-EA that they were going to be focused on nerfing anything that becomes excessively powerful during the EA period.

I 100% agree they should be handing out respecs and its shit that they haven't yet, but people should be expecting any builds they make that could be deemed "meta" to be eating the bat at some point.
So then next it will be minion builds that will be gutted, because at some point it has the same "automated" style with "Cast on X" archetype.

Next will be Deadeye because it has 2 buttons playstyle that can insta-skip pinnacle bosses, also range character, also have tailwind.

Next will be "Explode Warrior" because it can literally explode a whole screen of monster with just 1 auto attack and instant kill bosses wit hammer of the gods.

Next will be Grenade crossbow build because it sems that, playing with 3-4 different grenades to deal with various situation, then also need to include bolts skills, are still way too strong.

Next will be Quarterstaff build because building around to sustain Charged Staff buff and have another 4 skills to rotate for AoE or Single target and applying ailment for Tempest Bell combo seems still not enough.

What is the line here ? The fact that there were builds that revolving around "Cast on" gems as their main source of damage, and somehow they worked, meant that the gems were intentionally designed to be able to function like that in the first place.

If PoE 2 designed to be much more different, slower, more methodical combat oriented approach than PoE 1, why there are skills gem can scale to absurd amount of power to the point of clearing an entire screen of monsters with just one hit like warbinger armor explode ? or with gas nades ? Why lightning rod + magnetic salvo is allowed to exist when these interaction solve both clear and bosses damage ? WHY THE GAME STILL DESIGNED AROUND AN EXACT COPY OF POE 1 ITEMIZATION AND TRADING ?

Maybe if the cost of respecing is not this high, maybe if we aren't permanently locked with ascendancy and some quest choices, maybe if item crafting is not the same as casino-fest RNG system of PoE 1, people wouldn't just copy paste popular build and just call it a day when something get nerfed like this. Better crafting bench hello ? There wouldn't be a need to give much more loot than we should have right now, if only there is a system that can act as a fail-safe when people are unlucky.

The least you can do is giving free-respec after an obvious huge change on how a gem works, in which players are clearly trying to build around it and having "success" or "fun" in playing it. And you guys at GGG should know it, you guys can't possibly not knowing it right ? RIGHT ?

Game is supposed to be fun. This isnt.

I am out because you just deleted 72h of my life and do not seem to understand that.

What are you talking about. People have had their characters deleted. What's the point of playing at all? I did not copy this build from anyone, I came up with it myself, I come in the afternoon and can not kill even a couple of monsters, what are you talking about. Do I need to delete a character and push in a new one? You're a retard for saying that.

This seems to be one of the more mature posts in this long thread, so I'll tack onto it.

I am currently taking a break from POE2 to see how this shakes out. I am mid-game (low 50s) and my Sorc was affected. I don't know that the character is completely bricked as my build was already survivability focused, but it's pretty tedious to play now. I've no clue if the problem will be exacerbated in later levels if things stay as they are now but I suspect it will.

The core issue I have (again nothing new) is that the issue they "fixed" needed worked with a scalpel, and they used a hammer. I refuse to believe that no one at GGG saw this result coming, which is even more concerning. No plan was in place to give players some sort of recourse before making a major mechanical change to the game. This is a confidence shaker for the unknowns it now presents. Will this happen again to XYZ class? Will GGG bungle it by not being out in front of how it affects the players (like now)?

Like many others, I'm just a middle aged working professional who has limited time to put into a game. Being able to enjoy the rewards of the effort I've put in only to have it removed arbitrarily sucks the air out of the room pretty quickly.

Obviously mistakes were made here and these are forgivable. GGG are people too. GGG, we give you our time as well as our money. Please value both of these.

Stop defending them, up until this point you didn't have to pay money to enter the game. They got mandatory payment and destroyed what people were spending their time on.
