Are we stuck on Steam for PoE 2?

Steam bottlenecks DL/UL speeds and has limits to how much it will allow you to open it. Also, Steam being open by itself uses a core of your computer, which can put you behind game recommended spec if you don't have a really good computer.

from what i gather, some people report that running poe on steam makes it less stable or can have a less enjoyable performance.

i dont really realize this too much as most of us have steam anyway. but logically it would make sense.
[Removed by Support]. Both Standalone and Steam are literally the same client. Just the authentication and method for delivering updates is different. There's no such thing as "Steam client is unstable" or "worse performance".

also notice i mention that people have reported it. whether it is true or not we both dont have the actual data.

but that said. is it not logical to assume running steam client also implies also running a separate software on your pc which could affect the game performance?

people with good pcs tend to not notice such minor discrepancies. but not everyone has the luxury of a good pc. some may be using old pcs.

ever see people who do tweaks so that poe has potato graphics. remember that?

that said i m not going to argue with you whether it is or not the case. i m just pointing out that people have reported it as an issue. they could be wrong. we could be wrong. but as far as i m concerned, mentioning it is necessary to ensure that people are aware that some people may have this issue for discussion purposes.

But PoE in an online-only free-to-play game; there is no offline version. Without GGG keeping the servers going, a GOG version of PoE would be functionally identical to the Steam version, and the Epic Game Store version, and the standalone client -- i.e. non-functional. This the nature of the free-to-play online-only beast.

There's no purchase transaction happening here, so why be a purist about it? For this purpose, Steam is fine.

WHY should i use steam? WHY is the core question.

Because it costs you nothing, it works reliably, and it gets the job done.
Remember, remember the 6th of December...

This. Steam is absolutely the single best thing that happened to PC gaming.
I don't like 3rd party dependency. Steam sucks because it force me to use Valve account and their policies to play games. I'm trying to avoid of using Steam whenever it's possible.

There are a ton of very loud, terminally online people who value their self worth by how high the Steam number is for "their" game. Most D4 vs. PoE player number comparisons are made via Steam even though the numbers are non-representative of the player populations of either game. By forcing everyone to use Steam you can make your number higher. That's why PoE players want the non-Steam client discontinued even though it doesn't matter whatsoever since GGG can just share the true number of players. The PoE community will riot if the Steam number for PoE 2 max concurrent players isn't higher than Lost Ark's was.

If you don't enjoy the social features of Steam and you don't have a bunch of different games on your computer that you'd like a single launcher for then Steam has no value.

That is now how process schedulers work... Steam do not use a core jsut because it is running. It is just another proccess to schedule as any other would. Each tab in your browser is also a proccess to be scheduled.

Its not. And those games are not yours.

It is crap. At least for me.

Standalone PoE isn't yours either. Welcome to 2024. The age of physical media is long gone.
