Are we stuck on Steam for PoE 2?

100% cause there's no difference between the steam version and standalone version.
Both use your normal path of exile account and steam just auto logs you into the game account that's linked to your steam account.
Flames and madness. I'm so glad I didn't miss the fun.

Next to nil...IMO...insert the "Prove me wrong meme"

Yeah there's no difference in that regard. It's the same account, I've played the same account under steam and standalone. Right now I avoid steam like the plague, it's an unnecessary bloatware that can affect your ability to play a game for just being offline or having problems with the login servers. It's redundant and unnecessary in most cases.
Steam is crap.

Only worth attention electronic distribution model is the one from GOG.com - rest is crap.
from what i gather, some people report that running poe on steam makes it less stable or can have a less enjoyable performance.

i dont really realize this too much as most of us have steam anyway. but logically it would make sense.

another issue with steam is apparently updates are slower. i remember when i used the standalone i could download new league packs and directly plug em in waaaay earlier than steam users.

the reason i use steam tho is simple. security. i login to steam i dont need to do any 2fa as what the standalone used to do. so many times did i have to login to my email to get poe to run.

i ll be sticking to steam.

also since we're talking about the standalone client. i really miss the old "on the boat" login screen.

also a lot of people are missing out on all the old poe music which are no longer available

Im Russian. And our government will probably ban Steam this or next year. So I need poe2 standalone 100%.

For a game that can run in a local single-player mode, I could understand this. I think Steam has proven itself to be a pretty solid consumer experience overall, and the broader PC gaming market seems to agree on that point, but if you'd rather maintain an offline archive of your purchased install files, then I guess you do you. May the doing bring you joy.

But PoE in an online-only free-to-play game; there is no offline version. Without GGG keeping the servers going, a GOG version of PoE would be functionally identical to the Steam version, and the Epic Game Store version, and the standalone client -- i.e. non-functional. This the nature of the free-to-play online-only beast.

There's no purchase transaction happening here, so why be a purist about it? For this purpose, Steam is fine.
Remember, remember the 6th of December...

[Removed by Support] Both Standalone and Steam are literally the same client. Just the authentication and method for delivering updates is different. There's no such thing as "Steam client is unstable" or "worse performance".

Also 100% in the standalone client camp - never had PoE installed on Steam and have been playing well over 10 yrs now. Never been a fan of Steam and even less of other platforms. Here's to hoping that standalone will be an option for PoE 2.

played every league (alot) since 3.7patch with steam client and literally never had any issues with steam poe. Maybe you have other issues than actual steam?

Na. My PoE on Steam had so many performance issues from nowhere. Like monster didn´t load but could attack me, many lags when i used skills, 1 minute + loading screens even to my hideout also a short lag whenever i opened the crafting bench. It was really weird.

Changed to the standalone client with same hardware and the game was smooth. No issues at all. And yes i tried many things nothing helped with the steam issue. Since then i just play through standalone.

I think it's more likely that they try to mimic what Blizzard has done and create a GGG platform plugin with Steam adaptation. It's important to be able to manage your own store, client, patches, live updates when you get as complex as POE 2 is going to be.

It's one of the good things about the Blizzard model.
