If you look at other Blizzard titles, for all the memes and hate they do get (because it seems like all the cool kids do it), they all sell well, and have significant player engagement. Of the studios that have the biggest games of all time, across a number of genres, Blizzard is near the top. Say what you will, but you cannot argue with facts and results.

Sell numbers mean litteraly nothing in the end other than profit for the company.
Especially if you look at all blizzard games and how most of them are mere dead hanging on life support till blizzard decides to turn off the server for the last few remaining and paying customers.
That's not really a good accomplishment for such a large company.
OW 1 and 2 we don't have to talk about lol.
Starcraft dead without a new title to as replace for the genre.
Hots dead, didn't even survived long despite the big booming release.
hearthstone basically the same, used to be alive as fuck till better alternatives ended up on the market for the card game enjoyer. Server are just up to milk money out of the last players.
D4 big words and whatnot on what they want to deliver but in the end just overwatch 2 the 2nd lol.
WoW is the only game they have with some level of self respect towards their own game with classic being a success and even the last budget expansions being played by players for a longer time.
Sorry to crush your dreams or maybe even your crush on blizzard but the company is in fact not remotely as top as it used to be years ago lol
They simply take one big L after another and D4 was just no difference. 6 years of development by the way hoho
Necrop league bad

It takes 4 months for these three to receive the largest rework in history.

I suspect that the very nightmare that would have been trying to import poe2 ideas into poe1 is why they made the sane choice to start from scratch.

And that includes the new skill gem system. The existing one is basically PoE 1's identity. It'd be one of the first things people think of when asked to say what makes PoE 1 unique as an arpg and a game.

I'd honestly be gearing up to say goodbye to PoE 1 if I hadn't already. And so what? It's had a great run but come on. Its...so old now. And not in the classic timeless sense. In the outdated sense. GGG know it. Their owners know it.

It is more than enough that they get the chance to prove PoE 1 wasn't a fluke. And you don't do that by wasting energy on something obsolete.

Pray for a passion project offline mode. That would be the best fate for PoE 1 now.

yeap, its definitely not easy to make both gems systems exist side by side. i've actually proposed some ideas such as just making all gems and gear drop with poe2 new system, while any old poe1 gear on std will work as is but can be vendored to get a poe2 version. this was based on when GGG still wanted poe2 gems to be socketed into gear.

anyway thats all moot now. i'm ahead of you in that aspect. i've already accepted poe1 is going to be a game i m abandoning. it will be like diablo 1 where i had a blast but i m not gonna touch it anymore.

tho.... i might reinstall it for the purpose of working on my hideout, i've been putting that off for quite a while.

i really have no interest to play poe1 anymore. playing temp leagues, starting fresh, one of the roadblocks i encounter early is having to choose between having a gear with the right colours/links vs actual good stats. then i ll immediately remember how poe2 is supposed to solve this issue.

in another post i mention over innovated and then went backwards.

the gem system is one such instance. at base level its a very unique feature and is part of POE1's identity at this point. but down the line it stopped being a feature and became a hassle, but was already ingrained as being part of the games identity. the devs could have simplified it into just rolling white sockets like in poe2 but refused to budge.

it added a layer of tediousness and frustration that i am thankful that they decided to remove in poe2.

speaking of that gem system. i find it quite interesting.

GGG revealed the new gem system. Not long afterward, TLI "borrowed" the idea and innovated upon it where in their system they created a UI for all the skills and made all the slots "white". Now GGG changed their system to be the same as what TLI is doing.

i actually wouldnt mind if ggg took another feature found in TLI, where you automatically unlock links while leveling. they teach you how unlock the links and when you're near the end of the campaign, you would have naturally unlocked essentially a 5link (4 supports) for your main skill and perhaps 4 other 3 or 4 links for your other skills. you only start rolling links late in the campaign to get 6links or to add more links to your other skills, since by that time the "free links via leveling" feature would have finished.

this allows a very smooth game flow where newer players wont be left cursing for not hitting a high number of links and only makes linking a "min maxing" issue rather than a leveling issue.

that said, i do have resentment towards ggg for not being transparent about poe2 being separate.

i think they know that there will be standard players/poe 1 enjoyers that could quit playing poe1 cold turkey if they knew it was separate.

this includes myself. i kept playing temp leagues even tho i hated playing temp leagues because i had the idea that all my hard work and effort would make me have godlike gear when poe2 hits.

i wouldnt have WASTED all that time and effort if GGG was transparent about it. i seriously HATED playing temp leagues.

on top of that i threw in a lot of money thinking that my money would hasten poe2 and my standard characters would get to breath a new life in poe2 sooner.

if theres one thing i resent GGG for, its this. the with holding of information. i m pretty sure they had made the decision a long time before the 2nd exilecon. but they chose to remain silent about it.

i m hyped for poe2 but ggg cant give me back the time and effort i spent based on deception.

some would say "oh its GGG's right to do what ever they want with the game, you over invested". "GGG owes you nothing, its a free game".

all valid points, but by accepting those points i've learned not to trust GGG 100% anymore. which is kinda sad. i always had this idea that GGG were our bros and had our back.

then again, who am i to talk. many people who have created uniques/div cards have had their items become literal trash or even just disabled with no recourse.

lesson learned. dont invest too much time n money into GGG.

Brain was like TLI? Oh, Torchlight Infinite. Played a wee bit of it on the tablet. It's even less a Torchlight game than D3 was a Diablo game imo.

To be fair, the new skill gem system borrows pretty heavily from Sacred 2's, and any game that uses upgrade slots per skill rather than PoE 1's chaotic opportunity to balance active and support gems per item.

I plan to play PoE 2 on ps5 for as long as possible without putting in a cent. See how long that lasts. It'll be a fun exercise in willpower and judging a f2p game purely on its premise of being truly 'free to play'.

I haven't touched PoE 1 in years, so...already said my gbyes there. My PoE 1 experience peaked almost ten years ago. I realised this far too late, but that's always how it goes. :)

I don't expect any peaks with PoE 2. Nothing about it so far screams 'invest feelings in me!'...and yeah, even now, some games do. Just not this one.

lol sorry i forgot TLI is not too common. even tho i like it, i only touch it once in a very long while.

the dev team there is kinda small and theyre quite responsive. sometimes i bring up an issue on steam discussions and get surprised when the devs directly address me about my issue.

oh man... sacred was another great game that i loved. tho it got overshadowed by tit an quest. reminds of how sacred 3 and dungeon siege 3 killed their own respective franchises by deviating away from being a diabloclone.

i think i might enjoy poe2 a lot (sniffs hopium). but whether i give GGG a cent going forward.... i might. but probably not. i've contributed more than i should have. also now i have more life priorities than before. might as well get some irl clothes rather than mtx.

poe during beta was exactly the game i wanted to play. a game where we are classless and you could use any skill or equipment in the game as long as you fulfill the stat requirements.

sadly with the content creep in poe requiring such a high level of optimization, players are funneled into being more efficient.

poe2 now has more strict restrictions on skills as they are more strictly tied towards weapon class. but i can see its designed in a way to allow more flexibility, for starters we can choose wat attribute we want for each travelling attribute node (+10 str etc).

removal of life nodes is huge. we're no longer "passive taxed" to get life nodes.

the closest game in the market to what i like is actually GD/TLI/Undecember in order of preference.

Becouse "deal with it" new ggg position.
This is less prediction than just musing.

It would .. ironic, if PoE2 is a huge flop, pacing feels terrible for fans, and they have to go back to PoE1, which has a much lower fanbase because they abandoned it for multiple years.

It definitely feels like putting all your eggs in one basket to keep a tiny skeleton crew on PoE1.

But, I think the leads already made their money with the Tencent sale, so not much to lose. PoE2 flops, they retire.

You're no Jerle but yeah, I'd say you've done your share of supporting to entitle you to some freeplay with PoE 2.

Something else to consider: console players are FAR less apt to go full-bore on the supporting than PC players. One simple reason: a lot of us supported PoE 1 for the bling. The supporter titles. The custom avatar. Div card avatar. That sort of thing. The PoE forum is a mere alt-tab away from the game. But for a console player, it's a whole other device, and I speak from experience when I say mobile usage of this site is an utter pain in the bum. Even if they overhaul it for 2, console gamers just aren't as likely to use the web as part of the experience. They're also less apt to socialise in general beyond 'forced' interactions such as with PvP, which means somewhat less desire to buy shinies.

I HAVE seen a huge uptick in shinies on DIV since season 4 dropped, and DIV of course uses a shared town hub, open world and world boss encounters -- plenty of chances to show off your cashmoneybling. But DIV is also crossplay so I assume a lot of the blinged up players I see are on PC, not console.

Which is all to say, I am very interested in seeing how and if GGG try to monetise PoE 2 on console, or if they'll focus on PC players for support and chalk up the console population as less 'supporters' and more 'added units to the player count'. Storage is a given, and storage has always been the biggest seller. But support packs? Hm, we'll see.

i actually hid my badges for the longest time. only revealing them recently after my last ragequit. i guess its more of a "the jig is up, i m done with poe1, i was a whale all along" sort of thing. pretty sure others whaled harder than me but still the amount is a lot to me personally. i really did oversplurge on poe.

its interesting coz, it actually became a habit. "ooo cool mtx, let me own it while supporting GGG for their awesome game at the same time". for sure a lot of the mtx's were stuff i wanted but supporting GGG was always the enabler. the final nudge to justify the purchase. i really wanted it to be my forever game, and poe2's initial reveal laid out a plan that could mean poe would be a forever game and that in turn gave more value to the mtx purchases since all my mtx's would be usable in all future versions of poe.

as for console. its a little disappointing that the purchases made on console are split from pc. i say a little because i dont play on console so it become a case of "i dont care because it doesnt effect me" sort of deal. but i can imagine its an issue enough that if i were a console player i wouldnt purchase any mtx from ggg except perhaps some stash space. i dont really care for titles/forum avatars etc and GGG really knew how to harpoon me with the recent mtx, where they recognized that whales like me are jaded. we own a buttload of armorsets we no longer use and have certain sets that we love and keep using so newer armorsets dont appeal to us much, so they made special effects tied to supporter packs.

i dont know if you've been playing poe much since i believe you left a long time ago, heres a list of mtx effects that you might have missed out that i personally like.

1. premium armorsets that allow your character to fly/float
2. premium map devices that have very unique effects such as one that makes all portals consolidated into 1 portal with a remaining portal counter, a map device that tracks how much time you've spent in a map. and even a hilarious "belltower" device which progressively crumbles as you lose portals
3. finisher effects, my fav is a huge ass fist from the heavens slams down on uniques/rares when you kill them.
4. rings that track how many steps you've taken. rings that track how many currencies for each currency type within a league
5. various hideout effects such as invisible warp points, you could even make a maze using them, an actual chess board with movable pieces that players can actually play chess with each other. a pvp arena within your hideout.
6. additional flask effects/alternate flask effects, such as bloody rain appearing above you while using a health flask.
7. special effects while affected by buffs such as onslaught/phasing etc
8. total character texture replacement effect, one of such turns your entire character gold, regardless of colourscheme of the armor pieces.
9. on proc special effects such as alternate freeze effects, or special effects on crit.
10. alternate crafting bench mtx/npcs.

personally i think social aspect of mtx is kinda moot. i buy tons of mtx for me myself to enjoy. i usually play solo most of the time.

but as much as i have this opinion, GGG knows that forcing social aspects can sell mtx. i've gotten a lot of whispers from players asking what i m using while i log in and spawn in town. which is probably why we will never get a "spawn in ho" option.

talking about console, i really dont know what GGG's gameplan is. d4 has crossplay enabled so the forced social aspect really kicks in, tho i would say in d4 i m never curious on what other players are using as we almost never play zoomed all the way in. d4 also doesnt "need" mtx sales since they're a buy in pay to play game. poe on console is a different beast from poe on pc.

my best bet is for consoles, the price point would be lowered, or more goodies would be bundled in.

alternatively they could introduce console only mtx which would probably cause some pc players to scream at ggg lol

Given Chris' 2018 GDC talk about 'forever games', you were well within your rights to expect PoE 1 to be that. But I didn't believe it then and I don't believe it now. A forever 'any kind of service' is kind of a silly idea, but I bet it makes investors rub their hands in glee.

And yes, supporting was a habit. When you are happy to allocate a certain amount of money on a regular basis and can't immediately justify why beyond emotional feedback, that's a habit. Nothing wrong with that in itself; just good to be aware that that is what it was and is.

All ten of those mtxes fit within the basic 'aesthetic only' guideline GGG set themselves long ago, but when your game becomes actually uncomfortably aesthetically, the line blurs for sure.

Agreed re solo mtxes. Which is why I don't need any for DIV: the game gives me enough for free to satisfy 'my' idea of what my Wanderers should look like. PoE, on the other hand, is so barebones visually in vanilla state that, at the very least, you need to buy some skin transfer mtxes to really stop looking like a bit of a clown. There is no way that wasn't by design. I wouldn't mind if the base item designs were ALL the sort of thing you'd expect to find in a place like Wræclast, but...they're just not. And so we get the old MMO effect of 'looking like a fashion disaster for min/max purposes'. Solution? Sell fashion options.

Correct re Spawn in HO. Especially once they figure out how to make bigger, better hubs.

I do like to 'inspect' other players in DIV's hubs to see what they've got on without bugging them. PoE 2 would be well-served to have a similar feature.

The split purchase thing is mostly Sony I suspect.

__

You know, if GGG really want to show the world they can do it again, maybe they could surprise us by bucking the trend and not actually having seasons/leagues at all, since everyone does that now and GGG have a track record of not following trends but setting them. Maybe they'll innovate a new means of keeping people interested, supporting, and coming back. That'd be something.

OTOH y'all got a battle pass and loot crates so maybe not.
