Why gate the new gems behind lab?

Im pretty sure there are several people who hate the lab and only do it for the ascendancy once per difficulty so why put the new gems there?

yeah i only do lab once just for points. lab is widely disliked, not sure why the gems are gated behind it
I loathe lab with a passion and I desperately hope that they did not gate all the alternate gem effects and enchants and so on behind it, but given how much shit they crammed into heist for years on end I am not optimistic, the devs seem to be under the impression that the unplayed modes are unplayed because their rewards aren't good enough rather then because they are goddamn awful to play.
To make lab more interesting and rewarding again outside of Lab services.
Honestly a good change and swap instead of having gems locked behind just Heist (also a mechanic that's not really liked by a lot of players)

Not to mention it's a good ssf friendly change since a long while as well.

Exactly my thoughts, but hey people who actually like it can profit from it.
My first question is what the hell happens to Heist now?

Lab farming league confirmed. The alt skill gem rework seems completely insane and awesome. Might be the same as adding 50+ active skills to the game. We'll see.
It's not much different than it is now. Helm enchants are "locked" behind lab, which is a key element of skill power. You will be able to trade for these gems though, and it's likely they will drop from other sources, like the previous lab reward drop pools.
Lab needs to be revamped to be less incredibly annoying to do on builds with less than +500 movement speed, it already is one of the most efficient farming methods around. Its not loathed because its payout is garbage, although it is if you aren't selling lab enchants, its loathed because its mechanics suck, it takes ages on most builds and its just not interesting to do.
The other downside to being behind eternal lab is you cant level with them, at least at league start.

So then, its that odd feeling of a build you know you are going to erase and redo later, like when you build revolves around a level 70 unique or something.

Exactly, I don't know If I am looking forward to much of this at all. Gems locked behind Lab and 3 new Ascendancy's that all seemed like they are for casters.
