Most skill gems are unusable without specific gear
the majority of skill gems are completely unplayable without specific gearing obtained in endgame. More then half of the skills available in act1 without leveling gear are completely useless.
You can literally be in act1 with an empty skill tree and no gear, and simply by changing out your skill gem, have double or triple the clear speed as other gems. *you can use anything with the right gear* so then why are they available at say level 12 if to make the skill usable I need to have gear farmed from red maps? just remove all but the 4 or 5 gems that are actually useable without gear out of the quest reward system and make them available for vendor purchase once you get into maps. no need to clutter the quest reward screens with a 15 gem selection when only 2 are going to be usable at that point in the game. I hope there is serious balance considerations for the existing skill gems going into PoE2 bring back the state of the game in 1.3 vaults of atziri patch Last bumped on Nov 17, 2023, 11:40:52 AM

Always wondering why people that are literally around since beta come up with Statements and ideas like that. Like, what the actual F - you can use most if not all spells without any enabling gear up until act 7-8. Of course the clearspeed on some is better, as others are naturally better at single target. But "completely unplayable"? I dare you, show me that completely unplayable A1 skill and I will give u a sub 6 campaign run with it.

" Which does not make them "unusable" but merely not optimal. Personally, I dislike levelling with something I know I gonna swap for something completely different later on. So I use a skill as soon as I can get it but maybe keep another skill with higher single target DPS for bosses and such. Mostly, though, I just use the skill I want to build around. And even if that is not for you, you can still socket it somewhere and level it up until you have the gear. Granted, that's an SSF approach, you could also just buy a corrupted l21q23 one once you have the gear you think is needed to use the skill. However, I'm with Vennto here - there is no skill that is completely useless unless you are referring to some utility skills, which aren't useless per se but since they don't deal a lot of damage, you can't use them to kill stuff (Phase Run, Dash for example) Bird lover of Wraeclast

When building my character I started using smite from level 1, even though it is not optimal without specific gear. Leveling was smooth

GGG philosophy is "you need bad to enjoy good". Thats why 90$ of the skills are bad so you can enjoy 10% that are good.

Used smite for the current event and reached mid tier maps pretty smoothly even with a completely fucked up random nonsense tree, lack of useful nodes or good gear.
You can finish the campaign with every skill without problems and dive into maps without any "endgame" gear at all. You're just bad at the game if you fail to finish the campaign itself with whatever ability, cause it doesn't really takes that much power to achieve that. Even white - yellow maps barely require any power at all and you get more than enough gear or currency during your map leveling to make the jump into red maps. Flames and madness. i really dont know why people give smite as an example... since it double dips. if anything you just proved his point.

" Cause it's a undesired and not really used ability even in endgame and other melee skills are better to speed through the campaign and even endgame. Using it doesn't change the point that you can pick whatever and still be able to get past the campaign without problems. Some stuff is going to burn boss fights a bit easier but struggle with a quick clear, and vice versa. Flames and madness. I'm so glad I didn't miss the fun.
