Lightning Scorpion Pet Looks Cool, But...

"
I'm more satisfied with my kiwi, anyway.

This.

I think the shop has a nice variety of items, and I'm sure that time will bring even more choices. It is, by all appearances, GGG's primary means of generating revenue...so look for new cyber-merchandise on a regular basis.

Value is of course subjective; thousands of folks would eagerly plunk down $100 US to go see Madonna in concert...and call it a bargain (they best they ever had?)...but I wouldn't pay a 10-spot if you threw in a sandwich and fries. For their C-note, the Madonna fans get...a memory...while I get to watch my Silver Kiwi / Lightning Scorpion herald my support of a remarkable independent game developer who beat long odds to produce an ARPG that could someday redefine the genre...and I get that visual reminder for as long as I play the game. Who's "right", who's "wrong" ? ; both parties are happy, so all is good.

Choices...aren't they grand?

*Disclaimer- This is now a vintage saying*
If you want a scorpion, then the existence of the 900 point lighting one, can make one feel that the 700 point green one is more reasonably priced. Or even that the 70 point chrome one is a bargain.

Just because you do not buy something, because it is 'too expensive' does not mean that it is not aimed at you, and affecting your perceptions of what other objects are worth.
The op's question wasn't a complaint about the price, it was just a question about whether people thought it was worth it or not. that is a purely subjective question - my best friend just spent 400 dollars on a stamp, because he collects stamps - to me that is nuts, why buy a stamp when you can have a lightning scorpion?!

Now, the bigger question is - has GGG begun along a path that players think will actually be able to fund this game? That is an important question, and I am sure they would appreciate feedback along those lines..

Not everyone is going to like or agree with the pricing of some of the items, and that is ok - so long as it is balanced with lower priced options for people to get which they do have available. So long as they keep coming out with twisted and awesome (gory as fuck) items like the Valentine's Beating Heart - I don't think they will have any problem keeping the doors open. In fact I hope they make it a rule for the shop - the gorier and twisted the better.

I want a Cut in Half rabid bunny pet with glowing red eyes, with the insides leaving a trail of bits and blood behind it when we travel (i might be able to give my kiwi up for that, maybe) :P. My cute tiny witch is aiming for serial killer status with her beating heart wand, extra gore and anything else crazy they put in.

Or a crown of teeth, or belt of bones from my fallen enemies.

Redcaps are said to murder travellers who stray into their homes and dye their hats with their victims' blood, that would turn my hair into vibrant red, flowing blood instead of a cap.

So many awesome gory ideas they could come up to turn that shop into the best FTP shop in the world.

Then again, i am still praying i can afford a forum avatar when they release them for sale. Something tells me that is going to be out of the question for me but i can hope. It's the only item besides the Kiwi pets i have absolutely fallen in love with and want so very badly.

stop your complaining, nobody is forcing you to buy it...

if people are willing to give GGG money for making the great game they did (except for the game crashing after loading a few zones) they can go ahead.

your not forced.

or do you also complain against everyone that you cant afford to buy that ferrari only the rich people have?
@Origination: Worth is the wrong notion, imo, which should instead be whether or not the cost makes it rare/special enough. In that sense, I think 900 points is still not costly enough for a top-tier skin. Also, your reasons for obtaining things aren't necessarily the same as others' reasons.. see below.

Yes, but they could drop the price and open up the option for more people to want to pay.

They did. There are a number of price points for different skins of the same model.

Part of having some pets with a high price point is that it creates a natural rarity of that pet on the servers. The higher the price, the less of them there are, the more special they are both to the "owner" and the viewers.

I have been suggesting that GGG have pets at a $500+ price point for that very reason.. perhaps one of these days they will despite the inevitable outcry from many members posting in threads like this. And it doesn't even have to be any cooler than the already really cool lightning scorpion - a different colour is enough. Maybe I won't be able to afford it if/when such a pet is released, but someone will and then I'll get to have an "oh, cool!" moment when I see it in town (like when I saw the odd diamond kiwi before I upgraded). Note that, by this line of thinking, the specialness of the diamond kiwi slowly lessened as the number of diamond supporters grew.

I remember the Hyacinth Macaw from WoW when I played years ago.. got a crazy lucky drop off of the pirates on my first/only play-through and later found one in the AH for 5g by someone who had no idea how crazy rare they were. They looked bloody amazing and people frequently commented on them. There were other common parrots that thousands of people had, but seeing the Hyacinth Macaw was especially neat even though it was just a different colour. At least for those who liked pets.

People who say "think of the 90 bucks as a donation" are not thinking things out properly. A microtransaction shop is not created for people to donate, its created for people to snag things at a reasonable price for their ingame characters. The key word here is "reasonable" right? 90 bucks for a single pet is ridiculously overpriced and everyone knows that. I have spent plenty of money on PoE already and I am sure I will spend more. But seriously... 90 for one pet? Haha, no.

These are your opinions. I too have opinions. And I disagree. I'm also rather insulted by your opinion that I can't think "properly", whatever "properly" is. It is also my opinion that your notions of "not created to donate" and "created to snag things" are in direct conflict, given that the things are worth $0 - store credit and, subsequently, the items have no tangible/redeemable/transferable value.

The shop is created as an enticement to support GGG and/or an outlet to spend credit obtained from support - their means of staying in business. Some will buy credit specifically to get specific items (and your notions seem to place you in this camp). Others, like me, will support GGG with arbitrary amounts of money for various non-store-related reasons and then pop into the store and wonder what to spend the available credit on - this store credit being nothing more than a "thanks for the support".

Your notion of reasonable, is just your opinion and I don't think you can reasonably impress it upon others. Perception of reasonable dollar values vary by income bracket and level of interest or knowledge in the item. What's $90 to someone with $9 Million in the bank? What's $9,000, for that matter? But to someone living in debt, $0.90 is a lot. Why should I buy 500 $1 pets that everyone has, when I can buy a single $500 pet that very few people have? Even if that single $500 pet is essentially the same as a $5 pet, what elevates your opinion to fact that I'm crazy, stupid, or what will you for buying it or that GGG is crazy, greedy, or what will you for setting such a price? So yes, if you don't like it, don't buy it but also don't get up in arms about it.

Not everyone will think as I do, but I'm not pushing my opinions on others and insulting them for theirs. I'm simply presenting my take on things because I think there should be some balance to the negativity and you can decide for yourself. I would, however, suggest some honest introspection on just what it is that makes you lash out against the store pricing.. perhaps you'll find it's not really the pricing at all.

Oh, and the lightning scorpion is awesome.. picked one up right as soon as I made sure I had room in my stash. Can't wait until I can move things around in multiple (premium?) tabs. The current stash is hard on my OCD. And I don't have room for the other scorpions. :(

That pet is worth mentioning also. Do you know how long I farmed to have this parrot on several of my characters? I think I killed pirates for the equivalent in hours of maybe a month in order to get the first one to drop.

Just saying as a rare, one only - extremely lucky almost impossible to get drop - People would farm the hell out a place trying to get it and it would be another way to distract from the grindy feel and make it super fun. A recipe type thing to build a gory pet from rare body parts.

Maybe a rare Albino Baby Rhoa recipe, the pet could be rarer than the mirror and tradable. Actually the Rhoas would make a great pet to sell in the shop come to think of it.
