Differences between GH and HS:

1) GH has a much better chance to freeze (independent of a crit) an enemy than HS+hatred.
2) Enemies below 1/3 life will shatter when hit by GH while frozen, shortening the kill.
3) GH has a lower damage effectiveness than HS, lowering armor penetrating capability and making it leech much less than HS (not only is some of the damage cold damage which won't leech with item leech, but the damage effectiveness lowers it even further).
4) HS stuns and knocks back. You can decide if the GH freeze is more defensive than the HS stun+knockback. It probably is, perhaps significantly so.
5) GH is much more limited in weapon selection.

I tried GH early and could not find a mace anywhere close to the DPS of my axe. This is probably the main issue.

So, it's viable, but there are pros and cons.

I've yet to get a 73 or greater map with this guy, but I've ran several 68-72's, alching them all and just running whatever I get and just charging in fearless. Still a very durable build. Notable map mods that are dangerous, from my experience, are buffed bosses coupled with a weakness to said boss attack.

The things I've died to:
Buffed Colonnade Brutus/Kole style boss. Since then, I've learned to enfeeble those gigantic bosses, taken on more armor and use determination for those instances. It is easy to mitigate physical, especially with Bringer, as any durable hard hitter is blind. Only death to physical so far.

Buffed map bosses coupled with either elemental weakness mod, or reduced max resist. Level 71 Piety from Temple map one shot me with lightning this way. I died to double Kuduku Underground Sea map from same combo. I hadn't been running Purity as I was on 75 for all without it, but now I'm running Purity and am buying Elemental Adaptation next for 80 all resists to help with this.

A gang of those fire breathing hounds in a Wharf, or Pier map, who had multiple projectiles. They ate me alive.

I've also died to elemental reflect explosions from infernal blow+melee splash to large packs of mobs, but that applies to anybody suicidal enough to try to live through said explosions.

I don't know why I felt compelled to write all that. *shrugs*. I've really been enjoying your build.

I'd only comment that multiple projectile mobs can be greatly mitigated with a Lazhwar, don't know if you have that or not. :) Depends if it's a spell or not. If not, Ondar's plus Grace (35% chance to evade on character sheet is what I recommend) should make you nearly immune. Multiple extra projectiles is definitely a map mod I don't fear. :)

I'm big on running all of the auras all of the time. :) You never know when it will be required!

Enjoying some games in Fellshrine today haha) and had a 5L chest (for mage, all blue :( ), my first since I play this game, and also my first map ;)

I rolled a higher axe now, still blue as I don't have any currencies and I play SELF FOUND, so it's basically a big challenge.



I got around 1k7 HP, not so bad I guess but I get raped and my low damage doesn't help :/ I block for 65% with tempest shield, and I have around 2k5 armor actually. I would like to know if it's enough actually to run act 2 merci, or I need some better items, or skill gems...

Thanks for the help :) trying to find multistrike, but I think it will be hard to loot haha))

About intelligence i was more thinking about Enfeeble+Wrath that requires 151 at lvl 20, maybe you just keep them at ~100 int ?

By the way this build is really fun, pretty cheap and efficient !
in my opinion it only requires a Perandus+Lazwhar+1 mana leech item (thinking to Slitherpinch or earlier Wurm's belt) to start rocking :)
then multistrike is the the (lucky or "expensive") key point when you start to feel like a beast
- best in a 4L item with HS -
this gem was maybe one of my best investment since i'm playing PoE :)

We have 2x10% resistance from shield nodes, and 2x12% resistance from other resist nodes. That combined with purity makes resistance not a high priority on gear compaired to other builds.

Hi Ekyla -

Sorry it has taken me so long to reply.

First, a cheap upgrade is to max out the quality on your weapon. Use a few blacksmith's whetstones. Or, if you have any orbs of alchemy, take a white siege axe and use 4x blacksmith's whetstones on it, then the alchemy. Do this a few times and pick the best one. White siege axes drop like rain, fortunately.

If you really can't find better for now, use armourer's scraps on all of your armor pieces.

If I were you, I'd try to work some evasion in. As you know, the build uses evasion shields (32% block bucklers). Ideally, find one with a healthy evasion mod on it - you want to shoot for 30%+ avoidance on your character sheet.

I'd try to craft a ring with mana leech on it so you can remove the blood magic support from your attack skill and place something useful in there. This can be done with only around 100 orbs of alteration on average. These are very common from identifying and selling all of the blue items that drop.

Your boots are solid but you will want similar stats with some run speed on there too eventually.

I'm having a blast with this build. Modified it a bit though - didn't go for ondar's guile and took two extra endurance charges. Got 79% all res with 5 end charges and purity, about 65% damage reduction with charges and 30% evasion. 75% block with no tempest shield and Daresso Courage shield.
So far died only once in barracks on mercilles due to charging straight into screen full of elite guards with 4 lightning mages.

Managed to accidently 5L my armour and since then it's even easier.

I don't find reflect to be an issue at all, but that could be because a) I don't do as much damage as most of you, and b) I think GGG nerfed reflect. In any case we would block most of it without the spell block (I think only the 75% physical blocking would be checked -- we don't cast spells).
