It seems to me that there was an ambitious concept for the final game, but not enough time or resources were available to bring it to fruition.
One more issue: the concept of the cards is turned on its head: it’s not the card itself that matters, but the location where it’s placed. As a result, “cards” are no longer interesting items, but merely serve as counters. “Items are important”? I don't know what the point of the redesign of the final stage was.
