Ice Shot

Yeah I had a great idea to make an Ice Shot ranger for OB.

Then I found out the hard way what it does to the framerate. Finished A3 HC finding the erratic framerate more difficult than the boss.

It literally cuts my framerate down to 0-3 each time it splits out.

So, now I'm running a templar and am at the end of Act 3 again, only the boss left. The framerate is fine. The only time I get occasional drops is when the statues use Ice Shot.

I'm not sure what other skills do this, but Ice Shot is currently broken afaic. Needs some serious attention because it's an amazingly fun skill to use that is amazingly destructive on the framerate.
It seems any ability with ground ice involved is horrible for most machines. Its the pausing that kills you.

Need to find out what is causing this or just redo the ground ice effect.

How does this skill interact with pierce? Does it make 2 explosions if it hits 2 mobs or does it just leave ground ice at the 1st mob?

Would like to know this, too. As for fireball, when you link it with pierce, the ae dmg portion of the skill only occures on the first target hit, after piercing it, FB will only deal single target dmg to the next mob hit (no ae dmg more). Is it similar with ice shot?

EDIT: Does IS always chill its targets or does it chill on crit only or does it work in a completely different way? What causes the chill effect (arrow itself, cone behind the first target, ground ice)?

Ice shot applies AoE on hit, not on explosion.
Chill is caused by one of two things - being hit by cold damage, or standing in ground ice.

Does this mean that if I use Fork/Chain/Pierce on Ice Shot, all targets hit by the arrow get an ice cone behind them? Because if I remember correctly, all the stuff that explodes only does so on the last target hit.

Is Ice shot bugged somehow since atleast in my DPS chart it doesn't get any dps when I add physical dps items? Since in description it says converts 40% of physical damage to cold damage so clearly it should get dps increase from physical damage items.

In comparison to my Burning arrow which does get more dps from physcal damage items.

edit.
Just wondering if there is just wrong numbers in damage chart or is the skill bugged as whole

Does the ice shot cone of cold proc on targets that it pierces?

Edit: Nvm tested it myself and it works

It definitely works with pierce, its pretty sweet because im using both the passive pierce and the support gem.

Confirming the performance hit when using ice shot. Strange thing, sometimes it's fine sometimes it's brutal. I've come up with a theory that it's cause by the flash of light that it makes on hit. Other spells and shots don't have this effect (it lights up the surrounds like a strobe light). This would explain why there are less problems in open areas and more problems when more enemies are present- the shot doesn't seem to have to strike them all to produce the stutter.

I've tested this by playing with the shadows turned off, and performance massively improved. The stutter still occurs on a new level, when striking a new enemy, and occasionally at random, but it's far less often and less severe. It seems the lighting or shadows may be the culprit, but more people will need to test it because it could just be my GPU handling it better without the additional load from shadows.
Ice shot + Hatred.

Hatred is not multiplicative, but an additive conversion against your base damage. Hum.

This leads me to the following question: Does hatred add ice damage for the cone?

That is, if I have a 30% hatred, and a bow that's doing 100 damage. The cone is 100% cold conversion, so it hits for 100 cold damage. Now, we go apply hatred: it behaves as a 30% cold conversion. But there's no physical damage left, so intuitively we'd still be doing 100 cold damage.

But my instincts tell me the cone would actually be doing 130 cold damage, because it's an *additional* damage bonus that works the same as conversion.

This is a convoluted corner case that may or may not apply the conversion cap mechanism. Please let me know.

Yes, the damage from Hatred and Added Fire Damage has no interaction with converted damage. For example, Added Fire Damage linked to Glacial Hammer adds its damage based on 100% weapon damage and doesn't care that 50% of it is converted to cold. So yeah, it would basically be 130% cold damage.
