0.5.0 Hotfix

It's not just steam. I'm using the stand alone client and am getting it.

You are misunderstanding. There was a hotfix that was pushed out. Everyone did download it and cannot get back into game after.

What everyone is saying is that when they try to get back into the game, it says that there is a patch that needs to be downloaded in order to update the game. It looks like it is downloading something but it's actually not downloading. Steam just seems to be validating with now actual download. This is after the hotfix

Dunno about you but I closed the game, got an update, then when I restarted got the error, closed the game again and then Steam starting validating it.

That is exactly what happened. Steam never actually downloaded an update to my computer for the game. I don't know if there was an issue with the update provided by GGG, Steam had a problem making it available, or what. I can only say that the update hasn't been made available to Steam users yet, but is required by the servers. It still sucks, but it isn't clear where the problem is yet.
