No, Steam is not required. POE2 will also be playable via a standalone PC client and Epic Games Store.

The problem is the key they sent says "Steam Key" and there is an Epic one that is not available. We really need confirmation on whether we should claim the steam key even if we use the standalone client.

The steam key is just to give access to download through steam. it should even say that on the key page. if your account has access to the EA then you are good to use the standalone.

The standalone client login is tied to your account on here so you don't need a key.. The steam/epic link gives you a key since it's an external program..
I got the steam key, but also confused on the wording.

"Please note this key only unlocks the client in your library, it will not provide early access to your account and should not be given away"

does this mean no immediate access? or is just what?

The early access is tied to your account which has EA if you have this in your profile: "Your account is eligible for Path of Exile 2 Early Access!"

The steam key allows you to download the game client on steam but the EA is already tied to the account here (which I'm assuming is the same you use to login thru standalone and/or steam). Least that's how I interpret it.
OK I get it that's why it says it should not be given away as it will only work for my account, according to your interpretation. Ima wait a bit before making mistakes anyways.
Thanks to everyone's replies.

Also nice to see I'm not the only one that was wondering about this :)
I'm not opposed to Steam normally but I had serious issues with connection to PoE1 for whatever reason which is why I switched to the stand alone client, I hope PoE2 either runs better with Steam or also has stand alone client.
Path of Exile 2 will launch in Early Access at 11am December 6th PST on all supported platforms, including a standalone PC client, Steam and Epic Games Store clients as well as Xbox Series and PlayStation 5.

I just activated my Steam key, and Path of Exile 2 is now sitting pretty in my library. Not released yet, and I can't install it, but I can see it. We're almost in, Exiles!

I would claim it anyway you can always hide it on steam, but AFAIK your account gets access automatically as soon as you purchase a supporter pack with a key - the steam access code isn't doing anything more than letting you download the steam client because it isn't generally available.

So whether you claim it or not the standalone will work.

Think of it as you automatically have A, but you can install B (steam) or C (epic) if you want to. There is no point in them sending you a key for A its automatically assigned though I assume if you already have access it will then send you a key to distribute to friends.

Edit
"Upon purchasing your first supporter pack that includes an Early Access key, that key will be automatically redeemed on the account the purchase was made. You don’t have to do anything else, just download the game client when it’s available and login on launch day!"

There is the quote from the FAQ and yes i am gonna give you guys mild stick for not actually looking if you were concerned about this :p
