The community is taking the delay really well. Surprisingly well.

Nah. The reason for the delay is "we don't want to break your data." The flask system is likely a change that was happening already anyways, and they just let the PC Gamer guy know about it because why not. A GGG guy on the Discord did say that stuff that wouldn't quite make the cut for November 15th has a way better chance of being in for December 6th, but the amount/number of those things is pretty small. Viperesque put it quite well actually - "3 weeks of new content is a drop in the bucket when you guys are getting >5 years of content all at once."

Obviously they'll use the extra dev time while the backend engineers work on the database unsnarling, but it's not going to be a significant and ultra impactful contributor to what we get on release.

Well, excuse me for not taking GGG at their word. Many times they've gone back on their promises because they decided to rework something. Thing like "one client, two campaigns, shared endgame", "all acts and classes available from the start of early access", etc. So now it was revealed they're reworking the flask system again, I don't believe their statement of "we don't want to break your data" for the early access delay anymore.

An exchange which perfectly encapsulates the last seven pages of this thread.

I suppose I should say it, just for propriety's sake: "One client, two campaigns, shared endgame" changed to PoE2 being a separate game so that people who love PoE1 for what it is can still have it. It changed after GGG's attempts to change PoE1's systems into PoE2 systems caused Reddit to riot. Understandable (both the Reddit riot and GGG's pivot), since PoE2 was already shaping up to be a very different game. And "all acts and classes available from the start of early access" changed because the sheer scale of what GGG are attempting with PoE2, and the level of quality they're trying to achieve while doing it, are creating extra work for the development team as they end up constantly reworking and rebalancing existing systems to accommodate new changes. https://youtu.be/8GGhW8WGgig

But you're not willing to listen to the game's developers talk about the process of developing the game, are you?

Look, the way you feel is the way you feel. Your position is not logical, but there's no way to logic you out of a position that you didn't logic your way into. I recommend that you stop nursing a grudge over things that changed in PoE2's development process years ago (or even just months ago), since it's only making you miserable, but I'm not here to kink shame anyone. If you want to be miserable, if you're enjoying being miserable, than be miserable. You do you.

EDIT: It looks like the flask rework is more extensive than what GGG talked about in that interview from a couple of months back. Imagine, PC Gamer actually breaking news, and then sticking it in their print-only version. It'll be interesting to get hands on the new system and see how it works, but it is a pretty big change. On the one hand, no more flask piano. On the other hand, ????? https://youtu.be/d6b7ANbXcAU?t=391 Looking forward to getting all the deets in the livestream at the end of the month...

I am aware of their 'reasons' for breaking their earlier promises. Fact is, all those reasons are the result of decisions made. If they can't keep their promises, they shouldn't be making them.

You're just simping for them.

I don't really care how they develop a game. They should stop breaking their promises.

LOL. Exaggerating much? "nursing a grudge", "being miserable" :D You're projecting.

On the other hand, such a big change requires rework of many systems. Thus the 3 week delay for early access. Again breaking their promises.

Am I? Really? What have I posted lately which suggests that I'm miserable? Against whom am I nursing a grudge? Mildly frustrated by the forum discourse, maybe, and disappointed about the delay, but apart than that, I'm happy as a clam. Rest assured, no grudges are being held by me.

This looks to me like the sort of thing that a man with a grudge says. I will confess to being generally supportive of GGG, though. I mean, just look at my supporter pack badges. Obviously I'm supportive. That doesn't necessarily mean I'm incorrect in my conclusions.

I guess we're going to have to agree to disagree, here. I'm not seeing broken promises so much as I'm seeing their best-laid plans going awry. Of course, GGG could just never tell the player base anything at all until they have every detail 100% locked, but it doesn't take much imagination to guess what the reaction would be if they stopped talking about their plans entirely. And I wouldn't want them to; I like that they're excited to tell us about what they've got cooking. If that means they miss a couple of milestones, then I can roll with it... as long as they a) don't announce any more delays, and b) get a better handle on things after the early access launch. And, of course, c) the game is good, but I'm not too worried about that.

I don't know how much reworking was required for these flash system changes, and neither do you; we don't know yet what the changes actually look like. I do have some idea what the lead time is like for a printed magazine copy, and thus how long ago PC Gamer would have had to learn about those changes in order to be physically printing them for distribution this week. My guess would be that the flask rework was done a while ago, and I seriously doubt that they flask rework is any significant part of the 3 week delay.

I could be wrong, of course, but I think @1453R's point was that we should hesitate to ascribe to malice that which can be adequately explained by simple scope creep and legacy database issues. Jonathan isn't exaggerating when he describes the challenges that can come with merging or migrating a really old database; I've been through it a few times now, and it's been a nightmare every single time. So, yes, I can sympathize.

This is why most developers try to avoid talking about their in-progress game development as much as they can, outside of occasional and extremely heavily curated announcements and teasers. People hear "this is what our plan is right now" and treat it as an etched-in-titanium Blood Sworn Oath that cannot be changed no matter what, even if the changes are absolutely for the better.

This process is a normal and expected part of game development. Plans change. Development is a highly iterative and experimental process, or at least it is when the game/dev team are any damn good. PoE2 would be a dramatically worse game right now - and PoE1 would be dead and gone forever - if they had not 'broken their promises'.

If you're unwilling to adjust your expectations as development continues, I'd honestly just tune out of the news for PoE2 altogether and ignore the game's existence until it releases. Then there won't be any new 'promises' for them to break, and whatever arrives on December 6th is what you get.
