Upgraded my 1060. It looks like a brand new game.

Just ordered an upgrade myself. AMD 7700, 32 gigs of 6400 DDR5 memory and a 4070. All-white build, of course, because I'm a nerd.
Sometimes, just sometimes, you should really consider adapting to the world, instead of demanding that the world adapts to you.
You probably could have got the same visual clarity by enabling "Image Scaling" in your Nvidia control panel. I use a GTX1060 and it made a HUGE difference for me. If it's disabled then games look generally slightly blurry and dark, however when it's enabled games look sharp, brighter and generally way better. It's actually shocking how much of a difference it makes. And the best part? You don't need to spend money on upgrades :D

If PoE graphics are at a point where you can say they're better than (let me throw some random names) Cyberpunk, Horizon Zero Dawn, Crysis (lol), d3/d4/d2R (rofl) then maybe requiring a 4080 is justified.

edit: added d2R lol

Oh, nice! You bought new hardware so the developer will not waste their time on the optimization and just add new particles. I hope someday minimum system requirements will include RTX 4060. You virtually "optimized" your game by your pocket.

right!
and people who waste so much much money on hardware nearly every year will most likely buy 480$ support pack. so everything is fineeeeeeeeeeeee

do you mean first option in settings? so this "picture sharp"? and gpu-scaling?
well then it will look the same with my pimped 1060.

Yes, so what?
When were you ever able to run modern games properly on old hardware? My computer is going on 7 years now and still runs PoE (with a 1060) well enough for my taste.
In the past you wouldn't have been able to play a modern game on that old hardware.
And don't say "But PoE is more than 10 years old". The franchise is, but the engine is surely not the same that it was back then.

It's true, though, I'd prefer if devs just kept requirements low, because that is also true these days: games can look good enough without needing a 4080.

I think you don't fully understand the consequences of such claims. When you encourage ppl to upgrade their PCs to "fix" performance issues, you encourage devs NOT to fix the performance issues at the same time. There is literally no reason to make code better because user on his side can "fix" spaghetty code by just purschasing new hardware. And this is not infinite process.

Completely same situation happened to the two well known projects: ArmA series and .... Cyberpunk 2077. If you wanted to play ArmA 1 you had to buy top-end hardware. Devs figured out ppl can "fix" shitty Poseidon (Real Virtuality) engine performance issues by themselves by throwing thousands of bucks to the new CPU/GPU/RAM. What happened in ArmA 2? Basically top-end hardware became the bare minimum to play. Did you remember how A2 was laggy? Even after several years you had to buy top-end CPU/GPU to run outdated project with decent amount of FPS. The situation changed only after ArmA: Reforger release. They finally reset that madness and you don't need overclocked 4090 to run the game @ 120 FPS in 1080p.

Same shit happened to the Cyberpunk 2077 after releasing Witcher 3. Keep upgrading your HW and AD'ing how it fixed all issues so the devs won't even try to make something good. And do not be surprised after short period of time your 4060 performance will be insufficient to run the game smooth even with average / mediocre graphical settings.

As for the well optimized games:

1. ID Tech - based games like Quake
2. Diablo 4
3. WoW
4. Source-based engines including Dota and Counter Strike
5. IW-based games like Call of Duty

PoE performance is not complete crap but bellow than average. Thanks to users who throw thousands of dollars o HW and packs without any demand.

That's true, of course. But we don't know how optimized PoE's code really is. People also often underestimate the sheer amout of shit that's going on in the game, all of which has to be calculated and drawn.

I'd like to add a game to your list:
Unreal Tournament (the original from back in 1999 or so). That thing ran on anything.
Bird lover of Wraeclast
Las estrellas te iluminan - Hoy te sirven de guía
Te sientes tan fuerte que piensas - que nadie te puede tocar

Why is it always the guys on 3+ year old hardware complaining modern or consistently updated games run bad?
I believe the main problem is likely caused by the compression/decompression algorithm used (Brotli) bottlenecking the shader compilation. This is why cpu/ram upgrades seem to have the greatest effect on hideout idling fps as opposed to gpu upgrades. Ultimately GGG could fix this and FPS would probably double, so I agree that hardware is not the issue here...

You do know that you only have to update your hardware every 5 years to have a overall flawless and enjoyable time with your hobby right? No surprise that modern tech offers lots of better performance than the years old stuff.
So if you enjoy gaming it's anything but not a waste to spend a few bucks on hardware for a better gaming experience.
Flames and madness. I'm so glad I didn't miss the fun.
