Ok so these maps are clearly trolling and made purpsefully to enshittify the drop pool from this Valdo's Box. Because that is what drops in the game.
Actual valuable uniques do not have this void mod.
Nobody is going to ever open a map that deletes your character forever to get a fucking foil Ventor's Gamble. This is an instant delete or vendor thing.

On top of that a lot of people playing SC play because they are afraid to lose a char to something they cannot control. So why even have a map like that in SC? We used to have specific items only drop in HC and others only drop in SC, why not make that item only drop in HC? For a lot of HC players there isn't really a difference between a char being deleted or moved to SC, they start a new one anyways.
I agree with the idea, but it can't be implemented effectively because items can carried from Hardcore to Standard by suiciding a character. If it was a Hardcore-only drop, then it would likely end up being even less known to Standard players and thus even more dangerous.

the only grief that would happen, would come from the player entering tho...
take your time, read the mods, make up your mind whether you wanna risk it or not...
no griefing here
You make some very good points here. I'm only quoting selectively for space.
As I understand it the griefing options involve people pre-loading their hideout with open portals to an instance with a void on death mod which people can't see until they enter. So helping randoms, or friends with a "sense of humour", becomes hazardous. If that can be prevented somehow, great, but I'd still personally prefer the possibility wasn't there, rather than it was mitigated through UI.
"
if you mindlessly enter a map with hidden, formed and forgotten at a player power stage in which you barely kill acid caverns bosses, well... this is upon you.
player agency, you decide what you do
For every other mod in the Valdo's Puzzle Box options, I'd agree completely here. Look before you leap. But permanent character death in softcore still seems too far to me. Others disagree and that's fair.
If this was a hardcore-only option - there's a map mod which voids your character instead of sending to standard - I have far fewer problems with that. Selfishly, as I don't play hardcore or standard, but also since hardcore already involves character loss on death.
"
I would not agree on the "type you character name" approach, because... well... personally speaking... some of my names are just long, or even use fancy ascii stuff.
I guess they could ask for this once per character, or per league. Doesn't have to be a character name, just anything longer than clicking "yes" would be good, since I know a bunch of people who just don't read yes/no prompts.
Or make this an opt in checkbox at character creation, or in Settings, or in hideout portal options (still bizarrely under Decorations) alongside party portal access. "Allow softcore character loss mechanics". Off by default, portals blocked unless checked. Save people from themselves. But there we're still talking about ways of mitigating a situation I don't think should arise in the first place.
Overall you may have more faith in players than I do. I'm fairly convinced we'll see griefing unless steps are taken to mitigate that. I'm also not convinced people will read this every time, or necessarily understand what "sent to the void" means.
I don't think softcore should be "breakable" via any means, it should remain a safety net. This is more a point of principle.
I still have the same sour taste in my mouth that this supporter pack seems to be using the chance to void other player's characters as an incentive to convince players to part with money. This may well not have been the intention in the slightest, but it's one sad reading of the result.
Very well put! +1

I don't mind the existence of the "Void League on Death" mod since it is so niche. It is a bit dystopian to have players part with money for the opportunity to destroy other characters, but I guess that's the game we've signed up for at this point???
Anyways, because it's so punishing and outside softcore player expectations, there NEEDS to be some warning that pops up for the player when they click to enter a portal leading to a map with that mod.
Something like "Dying in the area you are about to enter will send your character to the Void League and become completely inaccessible. Would you like to continue?" 'Yes' 'No'
Avid door opening enjoyer.

There is a big ass warning sign before you enter the map. You literally have to click OK before being able to enter.
Y'all chill lmao.

100% agree with OP.
Death should not be possible in softcore whatsoever.
This is why people play softcore.
Mistakes can happen and I don't want to be irreparably punished for them.
I don't care if there are a 100 UI warnings, neon lights flicking all over my room, and a big alarm sounding all over my house before I enter.
I shouldn't be able to die. Period.

Ok that solves the issue. We have a guy in the guild who did a feared and voided thingy. We all had to take a deep breath at first ;P but we thanked him for the support he gave to the game we all love ;P and he did add a Mageblood as the reward which completely justifies the risk and a map like that would never end up in the hands of a griefer anyway^^
Farming a Mageblood takes a bazillion times longer than leveling several characters to mid 90's^^
And if that pops up GGG did their job...

You can simply not take the risk then?
It's literally optional
There are phat warning signs on it
You know what you sign up for if you open one of those
