Characters sent to void league on death should NOT be a map mod

take your time, read the mods, make up your mind whether you wanna risk it or not...
no griefing here

You make some very good points here. I'm only quoting selectively for space.

As I understand it the griefing options involve people pre-loading their hideout with open portals to an instance with a void on death mod which people can't see until they enter. So helping randoms, or friends with a "sense of humour", becomes hazardous. If that can be prevented somehow, great, but I'd still personally prefer the possibility wasn't there, rather than it was mitigated through UI.

player agency, you decide what you do

For every other mod in the Valdo's Puzzle Box options, I'd agree completely here. Look before you leap. But permanent character death in softcore still seems too far to me. Others disagree and that's fair.

If this was a hardcore-only option - there's a map mod which voids your character instead of sending to standard - I have far fewer problems with that. Selfishly, as I don't play hardcore or standard, but also since hardcore already involves character loss on death.

I would not agree on the "type you character name" approach, because... well... personally speaking... some of my names are just long, or even use fancy ascii stuff.

I guess they could ask for this once per character, or per league. Doesn't have to be a character name, just anything longer than clicking "yes" would be good, since I know a bunch of people who just don't read yes/no prompts.

Or make this an opt in checkbox at character creation, or in Settings, or in hideout portal options (still bizarrely under Decorations) alongside party portal access. "Allow softcore character loss mechanics". Off by default, portals blocked unless checked. Save people from themselves. But there we're still talking about ways of mitigating a situation I don't think should arise in the first place.

Overall you may have more faith in players than I do. I'm fairly convinced we'll see griefing unless steps are taken to mitigate that. I'm also not convinced people will read this every time, or necessarily understand what "sent to the void" means.

I don't think softcore should be "breakable" via any means, it should remain a safety net. This is more a point of principle.

I still have the same sour taste in my mouth that this supporter pack seems to be using the chance to void other player's characters as an incentive to convince players to part with money. This may well not have been the intention in the slightest, but it's one sad reading of the result.

I have over 3000 hours in the game... and to be fair, If I would play a map that sends me to a void league, I would think this is a good thing, because I never seen a void league in the game before.

It is just weird to have something like that in SC. Liek someone who only plays SC leagues, never encountered the void league. How should he know what that even means?

For me that sounds like instead of dying and losing XP you end up somewhere and basically get a second chance to get out without losing HP. Where in the game should a player even get the idea what "void league" even means.

Like surely a mod on something so special and rare is beneficial to you, right? Like yes hard content is ok, you just die and that is it. Why not say that dying in this map permanently deletes your character, that would be obvious. But the wording is the most terrible thing on that.

Usually being in a special league is a good thing. There is no actual void league. You can't even easily get a character there. It isn't like deleting a character uses the same language.

On top of that a lot of people playing SC play because they are afraid to lose a char to something they cannot control. So why even have a map like that in SC? We used to have specific items only drop in HC and others only drop in SC, why not make that item only drop in HC? For a lot of HC players there isn't really a difference between a char being deleted or moved to SC, they start a new one anyways.

and i really dont understand what the actual issue is...

people grief people, people will use this to try and troll people by getting their character deleted.

no one even knows this exists, like 0.001% of softcore players will even be aware that it is even possible for them to completely lose their character by dying in a certain situation.

do you know how many times a day in global chat people say hey, having trouble with this map can anyone help me? cant do my maven 2 portals left can someone kill her for me? blah blah, people ask for help all the time and people come jump in their map to help them. 99% of those players are not even going to be aware there is a mechanic in the softcore version of the game that deletes their character on death.

no one can help anyone any more. do you understand how often stuff like the bandits is pranked in hardcore to get peoples characters killed? and thats an act 2 levelling character that goes to standard. people are going to be pranking people by killing their level 100 standard characters with 3 mirrors worth of gear on who are nice enough to 'help' some noob in general chat asking for assistance. people are going to be putting the waypoints in their hideout on top of map portals trying to get people to accidentally go into the map.

people prank like this all the time, and now in a league where no one knows they can even die forever pranksters are being given the power to get peoples characters deleted. no one even knows to look out for it.

and when we do know to look out for it that means you can never party with random people, never do a rota with strangers for example, cant help anyone who asks for help in chat, cant make a new friend and just map with them that day, have to be highly on guard every single time you go to someones hideout to trade. its fucking absurd that this amount of bullshit is going to have to change for everyone in softcore just to have some stupid gimmick map mod. we have to live forever with "i cannot trust anyone i meet in this game ever" in our minds, an insane level of paranoia because its not like ok, this moron threw in a reflect map without telling the group and now half the party lost 10% xp. sucks but big deal, its 10% xp. No, this is irreparable damage losing stuff completely irreplaceable that might have taken 100s or even 1000+ hours to get.

and it wont change for most ppl, thats the thing, what will happen is no one even knows this exists and instead people are gonna log into care free softcore to enjoy their game and boom, some arsehole is going to ruin the entire game for them and they will probably uninstall the game they have spent 100s or 1000s of hours playing.

when i made characters in softcore with the rules clearly stated that was a guarantee from the developers that my character could not be deleted on death. that is being taken away from everyone in softcore and they dont even know. literally over a million people are going to log into softcore unaware this is even possible. never midn the map they need a click box on opening the game explaining to everyone in softcore that their character can now be deleted from the game in certain situations and that they need to be on guard forever in case people try and prank them.
Just to proof that people awareness should not be expected.

• If you would google "Void PoE" you will get link to divination card, redditing "void" also give not a big clue what it is
• Even at this discussion or reddit you could check how small involvement in discussion are, nearly week from the league start and 72 replies with 2600 non unique views meanwhile Steam 24-peak is 109k
• My personal awareness was get by random "meme post" at reddit with like 8 comments, and it required quite time for investigate meaning of item decription.

And reminder about internet and video games. If anything could be used as griefing - it would be used. Providing such tool is big mistake.

And out of curiosity about PoE mechanics. Are those "maps" would be awailable only at league? Or there is chance that at some point would be lost some 5 yo character at eternal? And what happens to stash if there is no characters in league?
Van the void mod be part of "Area has 4 random modifiers" part?
Saw that mod on some tier 17 maps.

The mod is in the game now. So I guess we will have to wait until some giga drama happens, Reddit blows up and maybe then we get some change.
This mod is the single most toxic thing they ever let happen in this game.

Still can hardly believe it.

This is equivalent to saying that there shouldn't be HC because you accidentally ticked the box.
i dont know the answer to that, and i dont even know what a tier 17 map is. im posting in this thread, i dont know what that is.

wtf are the million+ softcore players who play every league and in standard supposed to know about any of this?

i just seen in the patch notes on an update when i opened the game that the valdo maps were added? nothing telling me i could now prema die in softcore, that i need to be aware i could lose my characters forever if i go in someones map. no warnings at all.

people are going to die to this genuinely not knowing and it is going to ruin the entire game for them. why would the devs add that to the game? this is going to seriously upset people, they are going to lose everything and be totally fking destroyed by this, and some tedious glib person will say oh well you didnt read the mods or you went in a map of someone you couldnt trust hurr durr its on you lols....

just pathetic. people wont even know and those of us who do know the game is now forever different. i can never trust anyone again, i wont map with anyone, i will never make friends and map with people, i will never join any kind of social multiplayer thing in this game now ever. the devs have literally promoted people getting each other killed in hardcore as a form of comedy on the front of the website, there are people out there who are completely childish and will find it really funny to upset people as much as possible. they WILL be trying to use this to ruin the game for people and they will succeed.

to be sure you are not one of the people that happens to you have to do what all the "oh it doesnt matter lel" crew say, just never trust anyone, never go in a map with anyone, every time you go to someones hideout to trade have it in you mind that this person might be trying to completely fuck you and be on guard. just live the rest of your life in this game with that mentality forever otherwise its YOUR fault if someone pranks you and deletes your character.

thanks, great. what a fantastic game. thats where we are at now.

cant wait to see the first person whos day, week, month is ruined when they lose their character to autopiloting this autopilot game they have been autopiloting for 10 years or to some prankster that things its funny.

no its not. and people did tick a box, its called softcore and theyre in softcore right now playing a game with no idea theres actually void league hardcore death in their softcore league.
I agree. This game is extremely difficult. I enjoy playing this game, but when I try to get my friends to play this game, and this is just another detail that can really punish you despite spending a large amount of time on the game they want to play just to be forced out. Its not fun, and video games are supposed to be fun, not deter you from playing. Sometimes I don't read maps, and I lose 10% xp, ouch but whatever I got my character I spent the whole league playing still.
