Did leagues get better with the new 4 months cycle?

No. Can´t say that they got better.

no, they are actually worse. both content wise and now performance wise as well.

The time between leagues certainly hasn't improved things. Then again, quality has never been GGGs strong suit. Consistently leagues launch in an unfinished state. Not just with bugs, but with basic design flaws that any reasonable testing would have identified.
Personally though my biggest gripe of late are the concepts behind the leagues along with a number of design decisions. An ARPG that is solidly balanced around trade, that then provides league content that you can't quickly and easily jump out of to sell stuff is just bad design. On top of that, the Rares redesign was a reasonable concept that was terribly executed and continues to miss the mark. The players it was designed to provide a challenge to don't even notice it anymore, while less developed players get wrecked by gotcha mechanics. On top of all that you have the world's longest beta test with the devs trying to mix every other possible genre of games into an ARPG for want of a good new idea and like every B movie mad scientist, doing a poor job of it. There's a great game in here somewhere but I think its best days are well and truly behind it. |

" Well said. Not an insane rant one way or the other, just cold hard fact. I'd add, as others have mentioned, that GGG are hell bent on a "Vision". Too bad if players don't like it (and a lot do not). They no longer need the player base that got them going and supported them for years. That's how it goes when a company loses sight of why they started out in the first place.
I think that the shift towards POE2 has really hurt the league mechanics because of lack of developers working on POE1.
Now that being said even if I didn't like playing most of the leagues I liked buying stuff like Crucible trees and tattoo's which really opened up build diversity which was needed. Also the loot and the amazing Atlas Passive Tree is really really good. Shout out to GGG for really understanding the Passive Tree! I'm enjoying playing even though I have played very little league mechanics lately since 5 leagues ago when Sentinel ruled. And I did one Ancestral what-ever-you-call-it and I'd rather play the game (the real game). Anyway, let's really hope for a mapping augmentation league next...it is high time for another Sentinel/Scourge/Delirium. Last edited by MrWonderful99 on Sep 27, 2023, 11:04:57 PM

The answer to the question doesn't really matter. The change to league lengths didn't occur in a vacuum, we can't go back in time, and we don't have an alternate world where we can test what would happen if it was the only variable.
The better question would be "would being on a shorter cycle improve leagues?" and there's just no mechanism by which the answer could be yes. |

They would be way worse on a 3 month cycle with the small skeleton crew.
3 months would be better cause every league is kinda already dead past 1 - 1 1/2 months and other decent long term games don't really exist currently on the market. At least the extra month of waiting time gives us a somewhat decent and playable league even if half of the changes are questionable. Flames and madness. I'm so glad I didn't miss the fun. Far worse. 3.X is on maintenance mode.
"Parade your victories, hide your defeats. Mortals are so insecure."
Once you break the cycle of fear no angels or demons can whisper you their sweet nothing words. Retired since crucible.(Not a free tester anymore for a multi billion dollar company).
Last few leagues sucked when it comes to league mechanic itself, but it added some cool stuff to the game with it. ToTa added omens and tattos which are great, Crucible had item trees, Sanctum has Original Sin which enables some new cool builds (or makes existing ones much better).
