I know everyone thinks SO are completely dead, but I wanted to explain why they might still be OK! (at least still good for mapping?) You need them to be either ranged, either fast and aggressive, which is kinda' limiting your options. I'd go for Baranite Preachers (Ball Lightning spectres). Not sure which spells I'd trigger though, Detonate Dead with Cyclone-CWC-Desecrate might be cool. Unfortunately doesn't work :( I believe the quality bonus only checks for the Aura tag on linked gems and ignores the part you quoted. I am pretty sure it worked that way around Metamorph, I remember that I used it on a Stone golemancer. I dont know if it is/was a bug or intended. I will check my standard characters to see if I can try it myself, although I deleted most of them... :p EDIT: I tried and it does NOT work now - as it supposed to be.
