This is enitrley not true. The crowd who plays classic played private servers (free to play) and overlaps heavily with other free to play games (PoE/Warzone/LoL/Valiant).

I am a prime example of person who quit for classic. I got to maps and by then the queues on my server were no longer in the thousands after work and I just quit playing PoE. I mainly played during the 1-2 hour ques.

Blight was awesome, blighted maps had problems apparently but my reason for quitting so early was classic.
