Lets be honest, if you really cared about historically accurate battles you wouldn't be watching Game of Thrones. Everything was done for dramatic effect, which it did well, it was an intense episode.

To each their own, I though it was a great episode.

Okay, let's forget historically accurate battle tactics. How about just good plot / writing?

How do you show the hero(ine) get to the big bad guy when he's surrounded by his lackeys? Easy! You just don't. They just do...somehow.

How do you engineer an appropriate death for a goddamn ancient fire priestess? Easy! Just have her kill herself for no reason (at least none that was explained) cos the writers don't need her anymore.

How do you give a proper end to a tragic character who's fallen in the past and now finally redeemed himself? Easy! You just have him make a suicidal charge right before the thing he was trying to kill is killed off anyway (he had no way of knowing Arya ex machina was on the way).

How do you simultaneously destroy the credibility of both an all-seeing seer boy and the king of an endless army of ice zombies? Easy! You show the all-seeing seer having no idea on how to actually beat the ice zombie king, while iceman himself is actually killed in a flash by a deus ex machina that shouldn't even have been able to get close to him in the first place.

There's so many writing and plot decisions made in this episode for no other reason than pure drama and pandering, absent any sense, that it boggles the mind. Never mind historical realism in battle, they can't even write a proper plot resolution.

+1

That's what I also mentioned (but very briefly) in my first comment.

I totally agree with you and there is more to complain about....this episode is an insult to intelligence.

Makes you wonder if the entire series is no different, just the extra long battle scene gave the more devoted fans time to really think about it.

Nah, surely not. Must be feminists ruining it.

People are mad because they have to throw their elaborate theories in the garbage. I'm in the same boat but I'm not mad. I already made up new theories so it's all good.
GGG banning all political discussion shortly after getting acquired by China is a weird coincidence.

The entire series was decidedly not this stupid, but you're right that it has been for a while - and that has been pointed out. Many people have pointed out that the series has gone downhill ever since it ran out of book material to follow. This is best exemplified by the diminishment of the trio of plotters that was Tyrion, Varys and Littlefinger. But by that point it was already over halfway through the whole story, and so fans were caught by then, determined to see it through to the end. But no, it didn't used to be this bad - the shows writers made it this bad when they took over from GRRM.

It was a great episode except it was too dark. And now that the NK (not part of the books) is out of the way, we can revisit all of those characters we love and hate for three more episodes.

Judging by how they've completely trivialized one of the two major plot arcs of the entire story, I don't expect them to perform any better on the other one either. This shows writers are just plain bad. There's way more thoughtful GoT fan theories than what they've actually shown ever since they ran out of books to follow.

I'm mad because of how stupid the tactics were lol aka the writing. It defines all stupidity.

I'm ultimately okay with Arya killing the NK, but they way they displayed it was a directorial horror show.

Just... magical ninja girl teleportation? Really? Off the top of my head they could have shown 1-2 seconds of:
- The Hound throwing her from a rooftop
- Arya removing a white walker disguise
- A secret tunnel that Arya knows about
- Sneaking into the tree and descending from a limb
- All the white walkers turning around as she runs past them, even

... but no. Just floops, she teleported. Anything at all would have been sufficient. Then again, this is the same director that doesn't know the difference between a scene actually being dark and implying that a scene is dark.

EDIT: Just after I posted this, saw this from /r/got to show how it could have been: Battle scene brightened.

---

Sure it would have been better for Jon to be more involved with the NK. That was really his deal, and Arya is more meant to focus on Cersei. I have no idea what Jon is gonna do for the next three episodes other than maybe sit around in Winterfell, or lead a group of people to start rebuilding the Wall.

Jesus, they just sent all their best fighters, out to fight outside the WALLS straight into a horde of undead.

What the heck was that bullshit.

Could have been worse. They could have decided to charge with their artillery :-) maybe they will in the next battle....

This episode was probably so dark, that even the Night King's guards/generals didn't see her coming :-)
