Look at the "Gems" and "Sockets" section on the first page. That lists the Gems used and the order you socket them. For a quick recap though: Winter Orb has to be linked to CwC in your staff. All other sockets can be left unlinked because all sockets are hidden linked to the staff's inherent spell. The CwDT - Ball Lightning - CoH - Enfeeble should be linked in your chest so you can try for a 5 link to add Blind to it. The other link setups can be wherever.

I'd suggest putting a "Might of the Meek" in the jewel slot above the witch starting area. You lose out on the Frost Walker notable, but you gain 45 base int, 35% cold damage, and a few other chill/freeze bonuses.

Just found a Might of the Meek so I've gone with that and respecced the ele damage & Frost Walker nodes to the ele damage and cold damage nodes above which fall within the Might of the Meek radius which mitigates the damage lost on Frost Walker and you can easily make up the resistance on gear.

Probably not worth buying one unless you're totally pimped out already since they cost ~90c and you can get around 25 int + 15% damage on a regular jewel for a couple of chaos.
All my apologies : i didn't watch carefully the sockets section ^^

Is there much difference between the witch and scion versions of the occultist build?

Quite.

Scion have more leisure on a tree cause it have numerous starting points due to ascendancy and position of scion. Also have more int and passive skillpoints for the same reason.

Generally, just think about it that way : Scion have more damage and ele reflect immunity. Occultist have about 20% less damage, but instead have more ES, stun/chill/freeze complete immunity, and have an option to use arakaali pantheon, which makes our leech much more powerful. Tankiness of occultist on a whole new level.
Just reached level 95 and over 2100 Int with my Occultist!

Few thoughts about this version at this level:

Even if the tankyness and the clear speed seems better, single target DPS is way worse then the Ascendant one (full fire damage) and that is not a good thing since the longer we fight deadly targets the bigger is the chance to get 1 shoted or to make mistakes and die.

Damage wise Occultist is not only 20% less damage (single target) than the Ascendant fire version is even less i think. We have Hypothermia instead of Elemental Focus as dps gem and the difference is quite big in favour of EF. More than that HoI doesn't help us almost at all vs single target while HoA is giving more multiplier to damage.

I am not even sure if we can chill targets like Shaper so the Hypothermia more damage versus chilled target to count. If someone more experienced with how the chill and cold damage works and how much damage/hit should we do to chill end game bosses (Shaper, Guardians, Red Elder, etc.) please post your opinions.

If we can't chill end game bosses i think of replacing in single target staff Hypothermia with Controlled Destruction, numbers are bigger even if the target is chilled according to PoB for CD as a support gem against Hypothermia.

Based on a couple of PoB's I've put together it appears as the Scion version is roughly 30% more Shaper damage.

Personalty I can't bring myself to play an ice mage that shoots fire. The upside is the tankiness is quite real, as long as I have something to hit, I'm totally fine.

Syndicate on T16 maps? No problem, with all the adds and 11k ES, I just stand there and nuke... 90% of bosses are not a problem either, and the DPS is fine for trash. With the current rippiness of the Syndicate in high level maps, this feels safe and nice. Is the Scion version better? Maybe.

The Scion will have more damage, but way less energy shield, and leech rate. That opens it up to easier one shots, and the chance of quick two/three shots.

My take is that this version is quite different, but it really depends on if you feel that damage > tankiness, or tankiness > damage.

Ah, that age old debate. Offence or defence?

In other news though, they released the 3.5.0d patch notes! Not only are they rebalancing azurite and sulfite in Delve and making the Syndicate less rippy and screen clutter-y, but they're readding the "can apply +1 curses" veiled mod they teased before release! EZ 6L for our chest!
I'm facing my own epic battle with Defense vs Offense. I've been rocking this fantastic jewel.

and I must say that I love it quite a bit.

However, I'm debating dropping Herald of Ice for Vitality, and running this.

Kinda sad that Vitality is a useless Aura, BUT, that would hopefully allow me to replace the Life Leech gem with Controlled Destruction resulting in around 30-40% more damage.

Still trying to make up my mind before I recolor everything.
