What do you think about using femurs+jeweller's touch to get the 4th spectre and a 5l for 25c? Still leveling but i'm thinking about doing that.

There's actually 2 sets of stats for war maidens on poedb, just like with baranite sisters and a couple of monsters they preemptively nerfed because they didn't want people to use them effectively. You can see their real stats in the "LegionMotherOfFlamesMagmaOrbSpectre" line rather than the "LegionMotherOfFlamesMagmaOrb" line.

Fossil crafting still works, you must use the base that has the mod you want. So if you use a elder boot with bound fossil you can definitely hit +1 spectre gem mod on the boots. I have a pair with 78 life 20 move speed 19% light res and 2 opens suffix for sale for 1 ex :)

Trying out this new build, I am a bit confused - I die easily and the spectres don't seems to do that much damage?

Some questions:
* Do i have a big miss in my tree / equipment that could explain it?
* I am unable to level up kiterbots (lvl11) and golem gem (lvl9) due to lack of dex - is it expected that these can't go up a certain level (similar to the desecreate?)

You're missing the additional spectre node on the tree entirely, so basically a free 50% more damage multiplier as you will go from 2 -> 3 spectres. Grab an amulet with some dexterity, your current one does nothing really. Your shield is useless because you don't have necromantic aegis, which you need so that your minions can generate charges from using it, rather than you just wearing it. You haven't allocated all your ascendancy nodes yet so you're missing a significant amount of value their; when you do grab commander of darkness, you want to run a level 1 clarity/precision NOT linked to generosity, so that you get the bonus from the node to yourself. You don't have elemental equilibrium yet which also gives a tremendous amount of damage from you debuffing monsters, although if you are using slave drivers, you'll have to change your wand, as it adds lightning to spells which will mess up EE. You've pathed to the shadow tree for hybrid es/life nodes which is a waste, you just are lacking flat life on gear right now, not from the tree.

So, for what you should do:
Respec to the right side of the tree where you went for hybrid life es and use it to grab the +1 spectre node, maybe also fix your pathing on the left of the tree as it could be more efficient. Get elemental equilibrium and a wand without any lightning damage to spells. Grab a piece of gear with dex, preferably your amulet right now as its easy to get those stats their, and get a helm with some flat life. Get the ascendancy nodes you want, and if you do get Commander of Darkness, make sure you have at least one aura skill that affects you (isn't linked to generosity). Grab necromantic aegis if you want your shield to give charges to your spectres.

Edit: you dont need an aura for Commander of darkness res anymore, its been changed.

Kay for your starter build, how do you get Death Attunement?

Maybe I'm blind but I can't see any slots for large passive clusters either. Are you saying we shouldn't use those for this build?
