Ascendancy classes - RIP PVP?

With the currently revealed ascendency classes, some are simply better than others, while some others are noobtraps that look like the right choice for an archetype, but actually aren't. When a noob incinerator gets to highlevel and discovers that his chosen base class cannot ever be as good as the new fotm buildguide posted in the forums, he's going to be pretty frustrated. 20 regrets won't cut it in this case.

The enchantment system adds another massive layer of rng, one that most players will never be able to overcome. The difference in power between an average build and a bis one will increase further, perpetuating the belief that it's not possible to compete for new players in pvp.


I suspect ggg will over time balance the ascendency classes out somewhat with trial and error through a series of overbuffing and overnerfing, but they will balance it for pve, not pvp. Balancing for pve means balance for fighting a stationary mob with 0% block, 0% dodge, slow predictable attacks, a massive hitpoint pool and no conveniently placed pillars to stack ea on. That's the big difference with balancing extreme cards in card games, the cards are balanced for 1 ruleset, but there's no minority community who is taking those same cards and trying to build a parellel competition with an entirely different ruleset.

Since I think it most likely that when the dust settles after ascendency, the same mechanics and mirror/legacy items will have ended up on top, pvp will just probably be more of the same, only more extreme. And more one-sided.




Are you telling me, running ranger/ duelist incinerate is a good idea? I think the current gem reward system gives enough guidance already, You get Asc points as you level, if they read through what they can pick, its only act 3 normal progression, If they don't that's their fault, additionally you can regret Asc points.

Ascendancy adds additional perks to each class, Being less optimal doesn't mean its Not viable... With an additional set of variables, I think its a great opportunity to explore more wacky builds, After all its not the result of min max that matters, Its the chase and the frustration that gives the most fun.

And who here had their First character fully functional/ clearing Top tier maps/ winning PvP when they just started playing? Without guides, without friends or help from other players.

What I'm saying is that the new ascendency system will make it harder to completely salvage a character gone wrong. When someone with a struggling build asks/needs help, I can usually with a few tweaks design an intermediate one that will further along the road allow him to progress into his own version of some popular proven build. In the current game, if he has started from a suboptimal base class he will usually have at most a couple of passive points short, after ascendency he will be stuck with subpar ascendency subclasses as well.

And when I wrote that previous post I had incinerate in my mind as example, cause I was thinking of all the possibilties of a 5% base crit chance incinerate character.
Some people whine about whatever changes in the game.

Buffs coming? Omg ggg worst pvp ever.

Nerfs coming? We had enough nerfs.

Meta is changing? One EA guys appears and talks like like 'omg meta is changing... *blaming other builds going strong*

Lazy to farm? ''legacy items, mirrored items yaddi yadda... balance... D2... mirrored items... D2... mechanics... diversity... D2... legacy items... balance. '' zillions of paragraphs.

Also the "ignore enemy resists" isn't as broken as people make it out to be.. It equals to like ~20% more dmg if you only deal crits.


im pretty sure its way more than just "20% more" and u wont need only crits, just one :D

Asd yeah I actually brainfarted there a bit.

With lvl 21 pen gem and -5% from the passive tree the enemy is left with 32% resists. So it's actually 47% more dmg for crits in that case. But then again it's not really viable to cap your crit for pvp to fully benefit from it. Especially if you are using spells! Also as people have stated before, crit can already be countered pretty hard with a passive and the belt.. But yeah it definately is something, maybe some attack build can try to cap crit with some weapon and skip pen gem entirely.

The assassin class on the other hand seems rather GG vs CI builds.. 100% more crit at all times? ;S

haha. Just get Marylene's fallacy amulet with 160% crit multi and kill every CI in the game with one shot. It sounds broken to me.
