It is really powerful early game, yes. It's still plenty useful in Merciless (highest difficulty at the moment), but you won't be quite as immune to damage :)

Did you guys change the drop rate of this gem.
I use to be able to get it before the end of the first difficulty. Now I am half way thru ACT 1 on the second difficulty, and still no life gain on hit. Insanity is overrated unless you join me in mine.

If this supports a skill which is also supported by spell/attack totem, does it heal the totem or the player? Thanks!

So I'm assuming using this support gem when you have ghostreaver keystone will result in you gaining energy shield on hit?

Given Mark said in the post above that it is separate, I would not assume so.
I always thought it was different, but I don't actually know. Zaanus:

Ghost Reaver converts Life Leech. Life Gain on Hit is not Life Leech.
