I see what's happening, the Update.zip file is not bringing up an updated client. It brings a client with a modified date of 6/29/25.
Takes some tinkering, but here is how you validate it by yourself.
Step 1: have POE installed through steam.
Step 2: have POE installed through stand alone client.
Step 3: copy the PathOfExileClient in the steam folder '/Users/~/Library/Application Support/Steam/steamapps/common/Path of Exile/PathOfExileClient.app'
Step 4: Paste into stand alone client folder '/Users/~/Library/Application Support/Path of Exile'
Step 5: delete the Path of Exile executable in the stand alone client folder
Step 6: run the PathofExileClient.app in the standalone client folder.
Step 7: a file will get created for a few seconds called "Update.dat". Copy it while you can and save it in a separate folder as it will get deleted shortly (mine did).
Step 8: rename "Update.dat" to Update.zip and open it inside the stand alone client folder. It will create the updated "Path of Exile"
Step 9: see the modified date column. Suggesting GGG didn't even bother to update the client for MacOS, so the game is on a new version and the MacOS client is in the old version.
Thanks for making me waste hours in going through this and writing all this. Really nice of you guys... there was obviously not even the minimal smoke testing on this for Mac.
No love for Mac users, they don't even bother to update the client...
Hi GGG...
Does any one of you think it might be OK to at least acknowledge this issue?
I get it – it's a free game, we're not supposed to expect anything. Just seems like there's a right thing to do here and unless you just aren't aware of the issue yet, it's not being done.

Still getting the same update message on MacOS Sequoia. Nothing seems to change that - reboot, full uninstall and redownload, Steam vs standalone.
I delete the ~/Library/Application Support/Path of Exile/Path of Exile.app and then run PoE from Applications and see an update.dat created. Presumably that was just downloaded from GGG. That update.dat gets unzipped to recreate the Path of Exile.app folder. So it seems that update being downloaded and the one from a full fresh install is an old version that GGG isn't allowing to log in.
As for it being a free game, some of us have paid GGG more money for this than for other games that keep working more than a couple years.

Bumping to ask if there has been any motion at all on this issue, its been nearly 24 hours since the patch went live and GGG has not even officially acknowledged that this issue is not limited solely to the steam client but rather effects all Mac players (I am on the standalone client and have not been able to play even with attempting the laundry list of crowdsourced workarounds that have sometimes worked in the past).

bump... looks like there is some action on the xbox and sony fixes? Can we just get an updated client please? at this point I'm wondering if our situation is a mistake or was planned to be this way all along.
sucks to have radio silence, not even acknowledgement of the issue.

Just here to +1 everything that's been said. The mac client has been broken for multiple leagues now and every time the community figures out a workaround, a patch is released, and we're forced to crowdsource a new set of hoops to jump through.
I understand they have thousands of bug reports to go through, and issues may be prioritized by the number of users affected, but I wish they would give a little more value and consideration to the fact that mac users are unable to play the game at all.
Please fix this GGG, or at a bare minimum, credit all my MTX over to XBOX and I'll play the game on my console. It's a shame, because I really have enjoyed the little bit of the league I've been able to play.

I had this problem and tried to run it manually. This is how I got it to work:
cd ~/Library/Application Support/Path of Exile/Path of Exile.app/Contents/MacOS
./Path of Exile
It made me sign back in, but worked afterwards.
