The mana flask nerf is a lot more annoying (for me at least) than I thought it would be.

Honestly my plan right now is to use Spellslinger until I can put all the pieces together. And since this method is pretty efficient on its own I don't feel rushed to do so which is nice. Means I can take some time without cutting corners on the build.
So noob to this build and as soon as I hit 65 I picked up scold's and doedres malevoence and switched to Cyclone CWC VD...and my life drains instantly.

I'm realizing now I need a lot more investment to actually be able to run the build - so my question is what do I need to have (stats, nodes on tree etc) before I can spin to win without killing myself ded?

Yeah I'm still truckin along with the spellslinger setup. You're going to want a Glorious Vanity - Doryani for the Corrupted Soul keystone to split the damage between health and ES and to get a big ES boost.

Some ES Leech, Ghost Reaver, and possibly the Energy leech Support (if your damage isn't high enough to leech cap you)

I planned for no ES on hit, but if you can get it, it'll make things simpler.

If you can get to about 3k Life and 3k ES with Light Eater+Ghost Reaver, a high level Bone Offering, and some life regen (Stone Golem is your friend) this should be enough to keep you going in combat. Keep a life flask handy especially on lower levels.

And use this ring to recover a ton of life as well.
Just my opinion but you might consider making some mention of that in the required gear section -- I think I just gibbled myself in trying to go cyclone-cwc-vd waaaaaaaaaaay too early thinking I just needed scold's and the gloves. Not sure what to do now other than reroll. Respecced tree etc. Not your fault, the info is in the guide but it might save another person like me who just jumps in without reading fully. Thanks for the writeup, at any rate. Might go make another character and let this sit on the backburner until I have the coin to make it work.

You can avoid rerolling by using spellslinger. It works really well. You can use a tabula. I just happened to get suuuuper lucky with the CJack. Arc+Combustion+Spellslinger is great for spreading the debuff and healing with ignites.

my gear/links for reference

Edit: I will make an addendum to the required gear section as you are right, that will be helpful for people. Input is appreciated!

is the elementalist build easier to gear? since the belt helps a lot with the leech?

IF you can solve the mana and get leech capped then yes. Though I am now recommending we just use spellslinger until you can get the pieces together.
cool made some adjustments and am continuing on as spellslinger. Thanks for your response!
So just to be clear, the Necromancer build will still work right (Cyclone CWDT)?

There are a lot of options for life and ES regen outside of spirit offering.

For life regen, Stone Golem and passive tree should be enough.

For ES regen, Discipline, Light Eater and Essence Rush cluster should be more than enough to sustain?

There is also the Kitava's Disciple noteable from the unique cluster that consumes a corpse every 1 second for a 5% life and mana restore. Drawback is that you take 10% increased damage if you don't consume a corpse "recently" but I hardly think that would be a problem with this build.

I have all the gear to start running with this but I am not certain if I still need to run Bone Offering or not.
