Enki's Arc Witch Memorial Page

Hello, I'm loving this build. Using it as a league starter and will be my only build I play this league. I am looking for some help from anybody though.

I have about 330c+ my current gear and not sure where to go next in terms of upgrades. What should I prioritize? I think I'm ready to get a high end item in one of my slots, though not sure which.

Thanks!

So I was doing some PoB research into a Hungry loops setup for Lightning Spire trap (LSP), thought I'd share

Current setup is LSP, Trap and mine damage, Controlled destruction and elemental focus, which nets me 24252 Average hit vs Shaper. The trap hits every 0.35 seconds lasting 3.5 seconds so 10 hits, averaging 242,520 damage per trap.

Now if I add Advanced traps, I gain 29% duration which makes the trap last 4.515 seconds, meaning traps hit 12.9 times, effectively a 29% damage increase, for 312,850 damage per trap.

Lightning penetration (which is the highest damage increase other than concentrated effect), ups the average hit to 34914, 10 hits, 349,140 damage per trap, which is 37k (11.5%) more than Advanced traps, or 44% above the standard 4-link setup.

If we assume 3 traps at the start of a fight,
Advanced traps setup = 938,550 Damage, Trap cooldown 6.4s
Lightning Pen setup = 1,047,420 Damage, Trap cooldown 8s

Soo I did the math, over 32 seconds, you get a further 5 traps using Advanced traps, whereas you only get a further 4 from Lightning Pen, which we add to the original 3.

Advanced traps 8 traps = 2,508,800 Damage
Lightning Pen 7 traps = 2,443,980 Damage

So after 32seconds, assuming you throw out each Trap perfectly, lightning penetration is only 56k Less damage, which is 2.5% less damage, assuming your traps hit 100% and come out perfectly off CD, which they wont.

Advanced traps numbers are also bigger than they should be, cause the trap can either hit or it cant it dsnt hit 12.9 time it wld only hit 12 times soo each trap would really only do 291,024 damage, 2,328,192 damage after 8 traps, which is less than Lightning pen.

Soo why are we running Advanced traps by default? Added lightning damage is best for clearing, but we dont really use traps to clear only at strongboxes or bosses, in which case LSP is the best.

Even hypothermia would do more damage than Advanced traps, when though Ele focus the trap itself from procing ailments, our arc or storm brand would be chilling and the trap would still get the 39% more damage from the chill.

Energy Shield leech support would give the same 39% more damage as hypothermia with the added bonus of leeching ES to keep us topped off and prevent issues where we run out of ES for MoM.

Any thoughts from anybody? Might be doing something wrong but seems pretty clear cut to me

I havnt gotten to running Elder Shaper the gaurdians or Uber elder with the build yet, so I don't know how 32 second time stacks up to them. Its just the first number that evenly divides into both 6.4 and 8, so I picked it. Without doing the math, I think anything up to 45 seconds would end up with Lightning pen coming out ahead. And in real play lightning pen would probably be ahead all the way to 60 seconds because you wont be throwing out the traps perfectly on CD, nor will the trap hit 100% so the higher average hit from Lightning pen should carry it even further past 60s, not to mention, keeping a boss still for 3.5s seems alot more likely than 4.5 seconds, decoy totem will surely die before 3.5s,so I think even up to a 2minute fight, lightning pen will just be better?

EDIT:
Maybe the cast speed, instead of taking 0.67s to throw the trap it takes 0.48, but surely that dsnt mate a huge difference, maybe on hardcore? surely not softcore?

Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa... Guys... What happened here? I paused a few weeks into this league and now I come back and half of the passive tree has changed. No more life nodes, no more reduced mana reservation nodes... how's this even supposed to work? I'm scared, guys! Hold me :S

Halp?

Okay okay calm down man. All the life nodes that people usually get in the constitution notables may be gone, but actually they're replaced by life and energy shield nodes to the right of the witch tree, and going down to shadow for abit more life and attack/cast speed.

The reduced mana reservation node below zealot's oath isn't removed, and the one in scion cluster is replaced by a node a little right of Eldritch Battery and only need 1 point to get it from the path.

Don't be scared again okay :)

GGG please remove that comment, it's not relevant anymore and the player publicly quit years ago. It's so old, there's not even a report button to get some attention to this!

Leveling this Build

Spoiler

Your journey through the ten acts can be seen as an extensive tutorial, slowly confronting you with the majority of game mechanics and increasingly more difficult enemies to learn to counter.

This section will help you while playing through the ten acts and shows the recommended
passive tree progression, gem setups, quest progression and exp farming zone for each act.
Keep in mind that it may also include some major storyline spoilers, if you care about that.

If you want to explore zones or do quests not mentioned here, or even want to level with
a completely different skill then do that, this section is just an aid.

______________________________________________________________________

General Advices during Storyline

‣ Keep your flasks updated. I recommend to start with 2x Life Flasks, 1x Mana Flask and
2x Quicksilver Flasks, switch to a quest reward flask whenever the guide mentions it.

‣ Upgrade your gear. While not as relevant in the beginning, it's important to look out for gear with solid life and resistance rolls. Ideally you want to have all three Elemental Resistances capped at 75% at the end of Act 3, only Chaos Resistance may be at whatever value.
Rare or Unique gear pieces are not always the best for this purpose, sometimes you're better off with Magic gear giving life and a single resistance.

You can easily craft your own gear, ideally on already 4-linked pieces you get from vendors or drops, however only use Orbs of Transmutation/Augmentation/Alteration at this point, everything else is a huge waste!

‣ The Crafting Bench allows to refine gear pieces with things such as resistances, attributes, life or ES. All crafts need to be unlocked first, here's a list about where to find all recipes.

‣ Great Uniques for leveling are Lifesprig, Heartbreaker, Goldrim, Wanderlust and Tabula Rasa, but prioritize a good lifepool and capped resistances!

‣ We don't use the full gem setup during the acts. If you happen to get a 5-linked or even 6-linked Intelligence-based gearpiece, check the Arc setup in Gem section to know what to add.

‣ Use Portal Scrolls and enter town to refill flasks during bossfights.

‣ Get all waypoints you can find. I mention specific waypoints you will definitely need, but generally it's recommended to get them all, since you never know if you may disconnect or need to get back to that zone for other reasons.

‣ If there's multiple gems listed to get, it means you're supposed to get one of those as quest reward and buy the rest from the gem vendor in town.

‣ The passive tree goals for each act are just a pointer, if you're short by 1-2 points or overleveled that's not a big deal.

‣ Get Freezing Pulse, link it with Arcane Surge and throw away Fireball

Playstyle, Mapping & Bossfights

Playstyle

‣ Arc has great range, there's no need to get close to the enemy unless you want to proc Fortify.

‣ Movement is a big part in this build. It's not just good for fast clearing, but also forces you to learn all fights and proper positioning to succeed.

‣ Most enemy skills give you some cues and time to react. The more time you have, the more likely it's able to kill you even without any damage mods.

‣ These skills often also target your position during their animation start and won't follow you. Simply moving away is enough to survive in this case.

‣ The environment can be used to block many skills and is often meant to be made use of.

‣ Flasks refill pretty fast while clearing, you can usually keep them up with some practice.

Mapping

Before you start mapping, make sure that you have:

"
‣ atleast 3.5k Life and 1.2k Energy Shield

‣ Fire, Cold and Lightning Resistance capped at 75%

‣ all Spells and Movement Skills set to "attack without moving"

‣ the correct Pantheon powers activated (unlock extra powers as you map)

‣ a proper Flask setup (check the Flask section above)

Your first maps shouldn't be an issue with this, just keep on progressing through the Atlas.
Here's a comprehensive mapping guide you can read up on for more information.

Two more things you should read up on are monster mods and map mods to understand what everything does and how they may affect enemies or yourself.

While we can run all mapmods, decide for yourself if it's a good idea in that combination or against that boss. Things that are usually harmless can really start to hurt with the wrong mods!

The following mods affect our build negatively in some way:

"
Elemental Weakness: Counter with Wise Oak, Warding flask or 34% resistance overcap

Chance to avoid Elemental Ailments: Huge damage & safety loss, play cautiously

Enfeeble/Elemental Equilibrium/Resistance: Minor damage reductions, avoid stacking them

Less Recovery Rate: Lowers your recovery from Leech, Regeneration and Flasks

No Leech: Requires more Life Flask usage, play cautiously

Hexproof: Enfeeble does nothing here, play cautiously

Bossfights

All bossfights are mechanical, so your focus should be on learning how to play around them.

The usual strategy is throw your Lightning Spire Traps before starting the fight, cast Storm Brand or Decoy Totem at the boss, use DPS flasks and damage them until you have to move.

POELab has a section with guides & GIFs for all Endgame Bosses. The Map Reference Guide covers all map bosses but isn't updated for 3.6 yet, boss attribution is still correct but most tiers are off.

Frequently Asked Questions

Spoiler

Q: Why is my tooltip damage so low?
A: This build has many "hidden" damage multipliers - Shock, Penetration, Hypothermia, Unleash and Arcs "More Damage per remaining Chain" - which all aren't affecting tooltip damage at all. You need Path of Building to accurately calculate your damage, the Notes Tab of this builds PoB-Setup includes how to properly set it up.

Q: Why does this build invest into Minion Damage?
A: We take the Spiritual Aid Keystone, which applies "Minions deal #% increased Damage" and "Minions deal #% reduced Damage" to us.

Q: So can I link Minion Damage Support to my golems and gain damage?
A: No! Path of Exile is very strict with its wording, only the above mentioned stats apply to us. Anything else, be it "Minions deal #% more Damage", "Golems deal #% increased Damage", "Minions deal # to # additional Lightning Damage" or whatever else does not apply! Besides that, stats from Support Gems only apply to the skill they're linked to.

Q: Is "#% increased Cold Damage" enough to make Hypothermia work?
A: No, zero Cold Damage multiplied by that is still zero. You need any amount of flat Cold Damage added to Arc, the easiest ways to gain that are Hypnotic Eye Jewels or the Veiled Mod on Rings. Hover Arc in your skillbar to confirm if it works.

Q: Where should I put the saved passive points when using Devouring Diadem?
A: Until you're Lv94, just use them towards the Lv100 passive tree. If you're able to get past that, i'm sure you're also able to figure out what would benefit your setup and playstyle the most.

Q: How can I cap my resistances with all the listed Uniques?
A: You can't, and you shouldn't use all of them. Decision-making is an important skill for this game, and something that i'm trying to teach with this guide.

Let's take Devouring Diadem as example. Saving six passives sounds awesome, yet a good rare helmet will always be better. You're giving up potential life, resistances and damage from your helmet slot, and it's way harder to get with the right enchantment. Ask yourself if that's worth it and if you're ever going to invest enough for a good rare helmet.

Q: Why do we get Eldritch Battery instead of keeping Energy Shield protecting our Life?
There's two reasons. Firstly, this allows us to reserve all our Mana while still keeping Mind over Matter functional, and that without needing any specific Uniques. Secondly, this is where this games strict wording comes into play again. Mind over Matter only works with damage taken to Life, not Energy Shield! But when using Eldritch Battery, the damage will first get redirected to Energy Shield covering the Mana pool.

Q: Why is this build called beginner-friendly but not really tanky?
A: This is the result of some major issues within this game currently. We're already using all defenses available within the usual passive tree area for casters, and even try to squeeze in some more through gems and items.

Elementalist is also heavily outdated in this regard and offers nothing more than Chill and a conditional 8% Elemental Damage Reduction. Compared to the currently most popular Ascendancies, Occultist and Trickster, which both get a great amount of offensive and defensive stuff, this is an absolute joke.

Our best bet currently would be Block, but with the changes to how Spellblock is obtained this would require lots of investment and some very specific gear that probably only a handful of people would manage to craft, and that's just to get it to the point where it's reliable enough.

Q: *insert meta build* is better, this build sucks!
A: Yeah probably, and I couldn't care less. This is not meant to be a faceroll-everything meta build, because in my opinion people wouldn't learn anything useful from that.

Enki i don't get why we have to invest skill points into stuff that icreaae our minion damage and have to do with minions when we should be investing it in lighting based skills. Im talking about passive skills
Hey i'm a new player and i'm following your leveling guide and passive points guide for arc witch. right now I am level 45 on act 5 and i don't understand why most of our passive points are being put into passive skills that revolve around minion skills or minion damage, shouldn't our passive points be put into more psaaive skills revolving around lightning or elemental passive skills. Read carefully. We are taking minion damage because there is a notable node called "Spiritual Aid" which has something that reads "Increases and Reductions to Minion Damage also affects you". This means that ALL "Minions Deal Increased Damage" will also add to our Arc damage.

This question has been frequently questioned and yet people still keep asking.

Enki has even put this thing into his FAQ.

@Frash_18

1) Delete the comment, where you quote whole Enki's post - it's useless to put such mess into discussion
2) merge those 2 posts into 2, no need to spam that hard
3) read the guid. Especially the "frequently asked questions". There is complex explanation, why we use minion dmg nodes.
4) As you started playing 4 days ago - maybe put some trust into people which are developing his guid since... i don't know - 5 or 7 YEARS? You know, as they are so experience, maybe they know more about this game? So maybe don't try t teach them, but more learn from them?

Short note:
We are going 50/50 in terms of DMG and survi (around 50/50) - as glass canon builds (pure DPS, no sustain) are useless in this game. (at least in most cases). And there are nothing "useless" in this build, so read more carefully the guid, as there is everything explained step by step, if you are reading the guide, not just skipping most and then frustrete that "something isn't good!"...
Spiritual Command,
does "Minion Attack Speed also affect you" also include Cast Speed? Or is there another Passive Skill for Cast Speed?

How is it possible that this questions is still asked..., its not like if it was answered in the guide and in every single page of this post!

Poe have a big learning curve, Enki & Co spend a lot of a time to make this guide "noob friendly", so please be grateful and read it COMPLETELY and carefully before to jump in the forum asking same stupid question again and again, especially for new players. This questions is just polluting the forum and hiding others useful information and discussion.

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW IS ALREADY WELL EXPLAINED IN THE GUIDE !!
