After reading the comments, I'm thinking that this patch will be twice as effective as I'd anticipated.
All the entitled man-children and otherwise deliberately idiotic folk crying for "buffs rather than nerfs" will hopefully follow up their threats and leave this community.
POE is the haven of all "hardcore" gamers (whether they actually play on "hardcore difficulty" or not), since it is the only RPG with an intricate skill system, depth in its gameplay style and, most importantly, the CHALLENGE IT IMPOSES. The difficulty level of this game is one of its key features. Players seeking only "easy mode" grinding will, to my pleasure, flock over to diablo (and stay there -- or not).
DISCLAIMER: I've played ALL of the Blizzard/Activision franchises, and have enjoyed them each for what they where, and POE is, although from the same genre, a completely DIFFERENT kind of game, and must stay this way.
TL;DR: This game revels in its difficulty and complexity. If you want "buffs" or "ezmode" go play other games than host such things (Like d3, which, again, quite the successful game in that respect).
Finally, keep in mind that unique items are intended as an added flavor to a build, not quite it's most necessary piece (with few exceptions). Generally, a GG rare will surpass even the best rolled unique. Those whose tears flow as rivers after reading the notes, remember this: Koam's Heart was a MUST HAVE unique for ALL builds, only a while ago. After its "nerf", build diversity and varied demand sky rocketed. These changes -- nerfs -- are beneficial in all things.
Absolutely the best post yet.. You sir are spot on

A question: If I have a level 1 Freezing Pulse gem and corrupt it, does that allow it to go up to level 21? Or does it just go to level 2 and max out at 20? And if it adds quality, would that allow it to go above 20% quality? Or do we have to wait for a gem to be 20/20 and then use the Vaal Orb in hopes that it gains added quality/level?
More legacy uniques worth 50+ exalts. So glad I have my bringer of rain and saffell's. Too bad I'll never afford an aegis aurora. Will be fun to see what added quantity gem and items will be worth in a few months.
Sad about the spell totem change, but I think it's because spell dmg got buffed? Seems harsh, barely saw any actual damage totem builds. Most were the cullers for rarity find.
I am pretty sure it can only ADD a level or quality, not increase its maximum. So no point in using it before hitting the max values.

Who wants to play on Standard League anyway? It's your fault that you support Standard league
Who wants? Probably people that play on a, lets assume, average daily basis of 2...3 hours, and will need much more than 4 month to be able to reach an area level of 70+?! These players 'need' to continue in 'legacy' - this doesnt exclude to also experience the new leagues, but why to be forced to throw away half-done chars after they ended?
Standard really is the only league to play in UNLESS you like going through the same content again and again every 4 months. To see standard being ruined with all this legacy shit is extremely frustrating. I won't join any other leagues and start over, and I think many other players feel the same way. Replace all legacy or give us a new standard league where everyone - new and old - can play on even terms. I wish GG could explain their reasoning behind destroying the only permanent league with these legacy items.

+1 on this
Its about the challenge and although I am a new player and playing really casually (stuck around lvl81 so its not easy for me) am looking forward to new patch and changes. Nerfs happend because players broke the game and GGG maybe felt it was getting too easy and/or players got too lazy with their builds. Here comes a new league and a new challenge so stop whining and start brainstorming again. :)
Also from what I've read GGG is a very small team of people (10-15) trying to create a balanced game against thousands of people who are trying to break it and become OP. That is very hard to do imo and I for one can respect what they done with this game.
GGG stay true to your game and never make it ezmode farmfest.

Several Energy Shield passives have been improved.
Most spell damage, elemental damage and specific elemental damage passives have been improved.
unless "have been improved" means nerfed, then yes, you are the only one

Only because BOR and Aegis showed up (and kaoms was not MUST HAVE for all,ES or ES+CI not). Which are nerfed now anyway.
This game is never edning cycle. New uniques and builds-->nerf to the ground+rain of legacy items-->new uniques-->nerf to the ground+legacy items and so on... With no proper permanent league and total random in game mechanics redesign.
Btw gz on lvl 84.

people see "nerf" and cry.. why?
totem nerf? sure? you see new pasive tree?
nerf totem + buff spell damage = ?
vaal pact nerf, atack speed nerf..
yes.. but what i see now? mele char 70lvl killing dominus without any problem per 1-2min. self caster 85lvl killing dominus per 10-15 min and have 2-3 die. for fix this there are three ways.
1) nerf mele
2) buff casters and buff dominus (hidden nerf mele)
3) buff casters (all char no problem kill all boss in 10sec)
you can play "this" game? or you need the complexity and challenge? )
unique nerf?
example i have legacy aurora. I do not care)
i no have legacy aurora but have choise.. buy legacy aurora 900ex.. or buy perfect some rare)
p.s. sorry for my terrible english

whoever is in charge of actually balancing items at ggg is not doing his job very well, im also curious as to whether anyone actually tests anything before its released officially?
seems to me if ggg was doing its job there wouldnt be so many legacy items.
also in regards to "man-children" comment, how do you think a game would stay afloat with only a small handful of people? it takes masses to keep these things going, you think if ggg wasnt making a fortune off this game they would keep developing?
