my first race lasted 8 min

and then i died and went back to standard.

mistake 1 : picking a shadow

mistake 2 : not clearing the first area to max out level before second area. voidbears ? really ?

mistake 3 : being really bad at this game and entering a descent hardcore race on my first try.

can't wait to do it again :-)
useless post. the irony of my post is that its useless aswell
true.

it was meant humorously, it actually was fun. it was just really obvious how unprepared i was.

probably should try and read a few more posts on race strategy before the next one :-)

thank you for your kind words.
second area voidbears? Must have been a descent race hm?

Not at all a useless post, I was terrible in a descent race I entered. Glad to hear you're keen to play!

My first Descent race (I always play melee Shadow, because that's what I always play in races) I got FACESPLATTED by champion voidbearers in the second area.

But keep at it, because I guarantee Descent will make you a better player very quickly. As a shadow, sadly the best advice I can give you is get only enough experience in the first three areas to be around level 4.5-5 by the time you hit the dungeon proper. It gets a LOT easier from there, and I've said elsewhere that if there's one problem I've found with Descent it is that the first few areas are just too difficult to bother with -- skipping them with nominal killing makes Descent more of a 'race' than an event.

These days I can get a melee shadow to level 15-16 in Descent even with crap drops. And I typically suck at this game. It's all about learning when to kill and when to run, but Descent I find is much easier to figure out in that regard than normal act 1-2 races.

here's a tip i didn't know about until a few days ago about descent: you can skip the bosses. idk what the point of them are to tell you the truth.

To slow people down. You should only be able to open a chest if you kill the boss.

Racing is all about AE damage. It is why Duelist is a very popular racing character because they get cleave early, why kill one mob when you can kill a whole bunch at a time.

There is usually no real benefit killing level 1 mobs, once you become decent at learning how to avoid getting hit too much using abilities like cleave, sweep, etc you can take down a lot of mobs down that are several levels higher than you without really taking too much damage.

Most of the good racers just run through zones until massive piles of mobs accumulate, they AE them down and they keep going, ignoring ranged mobs, you don't have to kill everything.

What you can do to practice is make a hardcore character, kill the first zombie and then run straight to hillock ignoring the trash, you can easily kill him one on one in melee even as a witch so he is cake for a meleer, then go to terrace and run through there with an AE and only kill packs, go to mud flats, etc. Practice maneuvering so you are not sitting there getting hit by mobs, even small distances moved can prevent mobs from hitting you in melee.

You will find if the zone level is a bit ahead of your level you will get levels much faster. If you do not stop to kill one mob at a time then you will get exp much faster.
