I play this game with my 15 year old son. So there is always this unique perspective I get to see while sitting next to him.
My son is 16 and while he enjoys the game he finds it to be a bit too easy.

Finding loot and playing the game NEED to be core. And it's not, it's a sad replication of a stock market meant to keep players spinning wheels as LONG as possible. And naturally people (my son in this case) are being repelled by what should otherwise be a great game.
Yes, that is the core of the game. Perhaps you need to stop caring about what other people are doing and play the game for yourself.
We do, and it sucks that is what we are saying. We are not doing it "wrong" despite again I said at the very start "However you can and WILL math that out". It keeps being a bad time for a multitude of reasons some are not ignorable to gaming experience. Mostly the bugs and the fact that the game punishes trying things. Not getting powerful loot compounds those issues.

Also to your point that first astremntis we found was going for 500+ div at the time. We never sold it, because PLAYING with it was FAR more fun than any fake day trading we could have done. GGG is missing the point SO HARD when it comes to this.
Yep. Balancing the game around trade league instead of self-found is a huge mistake. Especially, since in every league so far the economy was broken within a week due to exploits and unintended interactions. It forces you into no-lifeing the game to keep up with the market or you soon fall so far behind that you are effectively forced into an SSF experience.

I wish SSF was balanced properly we would likely just play that.

It is. SSF was designed by PLAYERS to be a SELF IMPOSED CHALLENGE. GGG later added it as an official option, respecting the fact that it was always intended to be a SELF IMPOSED CHALLENGE.
Just because you think it should be something else, doesn't mean it isn't properly balanced for what it was designed to be.

the game is not fun. it never has been. some people found it fun in patch 0.1 because the game was brand new and there were things to explore and figure out etc. but the excitement of a new game is long gone. every new league becomes more of a drain.
the only reason people are still playing is because the temple craps out like 50 divs per run and this is AFTER the multiple mid league patches. when people were doing the exploit they were getting 100+ divs from temple.

I play this game with my 15 year old son. So there is always this unique perspective I get to see while sitting next to him.
There are literal points when I see the fun drain from his face. However you can and want to math that out... it's the effect the game is having on him.
We had such hype moments in season one. I remember randomly chancing into an astramentis (the good one before it was gutted, still have in a case with spaghetti and all). We were both running around the house and annoying mom. It was a legit awesome memory. That then, because he was running the monk at the time got to HAVE A FUCKING BLAST!
Not a single thing like that has happened since, everything slowly has the fun drained from it. Disappointment from slowing development to a crawl. Every season we boot it up it lasts less and less for both of us. Knowing all the issues still plaguing the game are still there (there are seemingly way more bugs in group play and we seem to find them all).
Finding loot and playing the game NEED to be core. And it's not, it's a sad replication of a stock market meant to keep players spinning wheels as LONG as possible. And naturally people (my son in this case) are being repelled by what should otherwise be a great game.
Half of the player base consisnt in chinese botters spaming farm and scalpers fliping items in the trade and currency exchange...
there are a couple of hundred players who map do shekema/temple etc etc.

Exactly this is what I posted changes for party play and asked the devs to make up their mind if this is a solo game or an online game.

I mean sure that's a way to use semantics to obfuscate my point. The game does not drop loot. Make any excuses needed, it still sucks and mandates playing a sweaty fake day trader instead of just playing the game. SSF is our only option of AVOIDING the horrible pit fall designs of a game balanced on RMT. So SSF is even more useless if it's only meant to alleviate the burden of a game horribly balanced around trade... yet it is a challenge mode? And as I stated "IF it WAS balanced" that would be all we played. We are aware of it's pointless existence in it's current state.
