GGG, XP loss should obviously be on top of the issue queue.

They should make the loss like 5% and see how people feel with that. I'm struggling with trying to level up but keep falling back down. Can barely reach level 79 here =(

A percentage won't work due to the exponential differences in experience requirements per level.

It needs to become dynamic, or it won't work.

Its like if you gave someone the same punishment for a speeding ticket and murder- doesn't make any sense.

Nah they'll remove it just like how they caved and changed portals, and even gave people infinite retries on difficulty 0 pinnacles.(or they plan to, not sure if that change is in yet)

XP loss feels rough because progression is thin. Gear upgrades are rare, crafting is limited, and with no steady forward motion, XP ends up doing all the heavy lifting. But if you take XP loss out, you hollow out the game. The real fix is building more meaningful progression around it—so it matters, but doesn’t break you.

I think this hits the nail on the head. The progression systems in this game (at least so far) are SEVERELY lacking.

The Atlas passive tree is extremely underwhelming. The chances of finding any gear that's an upgrade at this point is virtually nonexistent. And I've already gotten bored of running T15/16 maps (including +4 difficulty bosses) without getting enough fragments to do even a single league mechanic pinnacle encounter (breach, ultimatum, etc.).

I'm level 90 and leveling further is pretty much all there is to do now. So when I step into a map and approach the first pack of mobs, and then... I just drop over dead (despite having 90% all res, 20% of physical taken as fire, and ~3500 hp), without seeing a single mob, or even a single projectile, approach me, I immediately start to wonder what the point of this even is.

When I respawn, and vow to be REALLY SUPER CAREFUL this time, and then I drop over dead under the same mysterious circumstances, and realize I've just undone the last few maps worth of progress. That's when I quit in frustration and lose all enthusiasm for the game.

PoE 1 had similar moments of frustration, but it also had enough in the way of steady rewards and progression to keep bringing me back. PoE2 lacks a lot of the reward, so it's not unreasonable to ask that it might also lack some of the frustration.
Been playing for a few hours tonight. Started a bar into level 94. Had a few deaths. One was something I may have been able to avoid (maybe), the other 2 were ridiculous one shots. This would not bother me as much if not for the experience loss.

Ending my session with negative progression feels terrible. I think losing the experience you earn in a map may be one thing, but to hit players with an hour + exp penalty for one death is just bad. This is not a get good thing or build issue. I've cleaned almost all the T4 content this league and these deaths were just in regular t15 maps clearing to a citadel. Anyone being honest knows how easy it is with ethical builds to get one shot randomly with the current balancing. Never seen a game with so many on death effects, but that is a whole different topic.

Again, I think at the most removing the experience in the map you died in would be reasonable, and not feel terrible.

Posting in support of OP and many others who posted here and want this fixed.

Update:

*** Just had a completely invisible after death effect instant kill me through 4k EH as I walked past the mob I had killed. Low health rune still in tact and activated in my inventory.

Such a great way to lose over an hour of work. These are the moments I am close to saying forget this game, and right now GGG cant afford to many more people feeling this way.

That just means people will find ways to completely go around and ignore exp loss. More divines for all the exp farm groups and carries I guess lmao

Just like how I happily pay my divines to legion 5-way rota hosts in PoE 1, or I do Sanctum all day. There will eventually be OP exp strats in PoE 2 and everyone will do them to get to the level they want.

It feels so so good to just die and corpse-rush my face into bosses without caring about exp, I would pay any amount of divines to whoever so I can get carried and ignore game mechanics. Because that's more fun than losing 10% exp. The game has no right to steal away the progress which I have earned.

So either its gonna get changed, or the players will find ways to ignore it as if it isn't there at all. I don't really mind either outcome, but removing exp loss sure would save a lot of time, currency and sanity for a lot of players.

The year is 2025, not 2000 or 1998. Its time PoE finally moves on and deletes these clearly outdated mechanics that don't belong in any modern game.

Exp loss is pointless and serves no purpose at all(and many of the people in the countless threads about this issue agree), therefore it should be deleted. Or at least made optional. All it would take is a checkmark or on/off dropdown for it in the settings menu, such a simple fix.

Progression is certainly a big piece of this issue. In a lot of ways, I think the exp issue is something easy to focus on as a target; because its something that is solid.

Vs the plethora of things that build into the frustration.

Ultimately its a question of fun vs time- and a grind is likely to lose in that scenario.

I don't think this was a bad move. I think most of the map changes so far have been really good quality of life improvements. Overall mapping feels smoother and more fun.

The scaling however is off. It starts to feel good at 15s, but thats when exp takes a nosedive. I think 7-8s should feel like 15s do at the moment, and then more scaling up into the 15s.

I'm very anti grind motivated atm. The game feel fantastic, then all of a sudden you're getting nothing except currency. Now I have currency but I can't get gear upgrades. I'm in 15s seeing tier 4s, assuming I should be seeing tier 15s? Realizing as I say this, I don't even know what the tiers actually are; however intuitively they would correspond with the map levels. I just assumed that was the case, its likely not, lol. That would make too much sense.

Oh oh, it has to correspond with the modifier tiers, so t9 is max... I think. In that case, mapping should be 1-9, gearing tiers upto 9. It should all correspond.

Sorry, started spitballing.
