How does the golden charm work?
The trigger is killing a rare or unique monster.
Question is, does it also work on the one that triggers it? Last bumped on Apr 18, 2025, 5:55:07 PM

bumping this, was just having a discussion with someone about this question and i'd really like to know..
to me it seems clear that the intention is for the rarity to apply to the rare that triggers it.. otherwise the 1 second default duration seems to make the thing nearly 100% useless. |

My guess is a follows:
1. Rare dies. 2. The charm is activated. 3. The loot of the rare is generated. 4. One second passes. |

I agree that the guess matches the likely intention. How can we measure or confirm this?

well my friend who i was talking with about it was monitoring his character sheet while he killed rares, and his character sheet only updated after the rare died.. he believed it to be conclusive proof that it was only taking effect after the rare died.. i agreed that if it works that way it's a glaring oversight but i just can't imagine that it would be coded that way and given such a short time, because otherwise it would just be useless. his rebuttal was that generally in poe 1, "on kill" effects don't happen to the creature that triggers them.
i think it's most likely that the rare dies and the charm activates in the same server tick, and the character sheet is updated later because there are more important things to update than the sheet that will probably not be open 99.999% of the time while players are killing monsters. i'd like some feedback from ggg on this, but maybe it'll be better to ask on the discord. i know i've seen screenshots of a lot of small questions answered there, and i'm sure they have their hands full with more pressing issues right now. |

+1 want to know.
Is this also the case with the other charms? E.g., does a ruby charm reduce the damage of the hit that triggers it? Last edited by FacePerson#7413 on Dec 27, 2024, 4:51:02 PM

" You can open your skill panel and click the arrow that expances the details of the skills. Now there is portion "on kill effects" where you can see rarity modifier. Now go to the lowlevel map because you have to open that panel to see effects and it fills over half of your screen. Now run and find rare and when you kill it you see it. This is how i figured out, that indeed golden charms do not stack. Even if you put 3 of them on, you only get that 20% buff. This panel dosnt show the map or tablet buffs, its only for the kill strike buff. |

that's not the question though.. it's not "do the effects of multiple charms stack?" it's "do they even work as you would expect?"
i have heard of someone getting 100% reduced rarity on gear and killing a rare with a charm equipped, and only white items drop. that is just hearsay of course, but if it's true then the charm is only activating after the rare that triggers it.. that makes it functionally useless except in very densely packed breaches where you could get some benefit from the 1 second of rarity boost. we really need someone from ggg to comment on this to know if it's working as intended or not. |

+1. The current wording on charms is really UX blasphemy. Every damn player is wondering whether or not they also apply to thing that triggered them.
