Potential fix for multithread crashing issues from 24H2 Win update
Hi GGG and community,
In relation to this: New: Investigating cases where some players experience crashes related to Multithreading and have to restart their PCs. This seems to mostly be for players with the Windows 24H2 update. ----------- I have been plagued with this issue when portalling between zones, it seems as though the CPU is spiking which causes a system crash. It is worth noting that durning my troubleshooting, ive obeserved this issue happens too a number of games, not just POE2. Some workarounds have been the likes of disabling multithreading or setting affinity for poe2 process in task manager, turning CPU 0 and CPU 1 off, this allows you too enter the task manager in the event of a crash. These were previous steps id personally taken in working around, however, Windows seems to have addressed this issue in a recent, optional Windows update. The update is KB5048162 and is found in the optional updates section on the Settings/Windows update. KB5048162 patchnotes seemingly address this issue and will likely be deployed in the next feature update. The patch notes are as follows: ---- Summary Security Improvements There are no new security improvements in this release. This update is cumulative and contains all previously released security improvements. Quality and Reliability Improvements .NET Runtime - Addresses an issue where in rare cases where an infinite loop could occur when a thread enters CLR for the first time. ---- I have since updated to the new optional update and tested portalling ingame extensively, i have not crashed since. I hope this helps anyone affected, this seems to be a permenant fix. Kind Regards Jammies Last bumped on Jan 4, 2025, 12:34:39 PM

Apparently worked for me as well, had 0 crashes during 3h of testing.
Thanks Jammies! |

Nice, good to hear.

I have the update installed and still the game crashes for me with 7800x3d and 4090 :'(
|

Is it the same type of crash though? Since I've applied the update and restarted, I've not had the issue again. CPU is stable at around 25% at all times

" My CPU is around 28-30% usage while playing. Also I checked my update history, I already have KB5048162 installed (yesterday) and I am still crashing to desktop on a regular basis. |
|
Hi same issue.. tried 4 times this morning and PC keeps freezing so force restart..
unable to play now |

Crashing to desktop isn't the same type of crashes or symptoms caused by this 24h2 mutlithreading issue.
These crashes physically crash the computer and have to force a reset of the device. If you turn multi threading off from the in game settings and you are still crashing, then it certainly isn't the same. I'd suggest raising a ticket with GGG. |

" Well, must correct myself here. Game just crashed in exactly the same way as before. Might have received a bit more time due to the update, but it's not a proper fix after all. |
|
so its reduced the likelyhood of the crashing occuring, probably why its an optional update as there is still the potenital for crashing the first time a thread enters CLR.
Either way, its not an issue with GGG, this is happening over mutiple games, windows should release a permenant fix for it. I still havent crashed since i implemented the update. So even if i do crash now, i would have crashed atleast 10 times by now, so its a win either way. |
