I must agree this genre seems to have this element in every community. Somewhere along the way people stopped playing the games for themselves....I blame D3...but not entirely sure it started there.

Nope, pretty sure it started with D2 already. Back in something like 2003 people who played online ladders were playing the exact same builds, and others were considered shit.
